UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.

vl-:NTlLATlNe-T."
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,606, dated September 9, 1902.
Application filed April 18, 1902.
Serial No. 103,578. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD F. WIXTED, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Ventilating-Ts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ventilating-Ts for use in sanitary plumbing.
It is well known to those skilled in the art of plumbing that inusing the ordinary waterseal traps it is necessary to provide means for preventing siphonage, and one of themethods employed for this purpose is by the use of a Ventilating-T located between the trap and the stack or main vertical soil-pipe. The partitions wherein such stacks are located are frequently so thin as to greatly restrict the direction in which the horizontal opening of the T may extend. This restriction is due to the bulky form of the ordinary Ventilating-T at the juncture of the vent and T. f
The object of my invention is to provide a Ventilating-T of such construction that a wide range of adjustment is permitted for the horizontal pipe, even when the stack is located in a partition hardly greater than the exterior diameter of said stack. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of the T. Fig. 2 is a plan sectional view of the T, taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. There is also indicated in dotted lines the possible adjustment of the T when located in a thin partition. Fig. 3 is a View in elevation indicating the manner of locating the T in the partition and floor of al building.
Similarletters refer to similarparts through out the several Views.
a represents a portion of the stack or soilpipe located above the T, the joint b of the T being adapted to receive its lower extremity.
c is the lower extremity of the T and is received by the lower portion d of the stack.
The horizontal branch e is adapted to join with the pipe f. i The vent g commences at a point near the top of said horizontal branch and is so located that no part of the juncture is Within the line of the vertical stack. From its junction with the branch e the vent extends upwardly and also curves laterally in such a manner as to come at the side of the vertical portion of the T. The upper extremity or mouth of the ventg is located at the side of the vertical portion of the T, so that no part of said mouth is directly over any portion of said horizontal branch e. Moreover, said mouth is so located relatively to said vertical portion of the T as to lie sub- 6o stantially adjacent to a reference-plane extending transverse to the horizontal branch'e andv tangent to the Vertical portion of said T at its juncture with said horizontal branch.
The advantages of this construction will be evident by referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, in which h h represent the walls of a partition, fi represents the floor, j the ceilingbelow, and k k the joists of a building.A The walls of the partition are shown to be at 7o a distance apart slightly greater than the diameter of the stack. The point of juncture of the vent and the branch e lies between the lioor 't' and ceilingj, and the T may therefore be rotated without interfering with the floor or ceiling. The mouth of the vent, however, comes up between the walls h h of the partition, and when said T is squared the said mouth is adjacent to the front wall of the partition. If desired, the T may be swung 8o "in the direction of the curved arrow, Fig. 2,
until the vent comes into contact with the rear one of the walls h, as shown in dotted lines. This permits a wide range of adjustment in one direction, and by making right7 85 and left7 Ts there is practically no restriction as to direction of the horizontal branch e. All lateral bends are avoided, thereby giving a straight run from the trap or closet to the main stack. 9o
Another advantageous feature of this T is that the vent lies nearer to the mouth of the horizontal branch, so that when connected up the juncture of said vent and branche may closely approach the trap, thereby rendering it easily possible to conformto the usual statutory requirements for plumbing.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A Ventilating-T having a horizontal and roo a vertical branch, and a vent open at the top and joining with the said horizontal branch out of line with said vertical branch.
` 2. In a Ventilating-T, the combination of a branch, a vertical branch, and a vent, the juncture of the vent With said horizontal branch lying Wh olly on said horizontal branch and the mouth of said vent lying substantially adjacent to said vertical branch; and the mouth of said vent lying between reference-planes extending transversely to said horizontal branch and tangent to said Vertical branch.
EDWARD F. VIXTED.
