SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,610, dated August 26, 1902. Application filed August 22, 1901. Serial No. 72,931. (No model.)

Be it known that I, JULIUS MOELLER, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Moscow, in the Empire of Russia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carrying Devices, of which the following is a specification. 7

My invention relates to an improved carrying device adapted to be attached to the body of a person; and it consists of a belt provided with shoulder-pieces advantageously arranged to sit crosswise over the back of the wearer and formed with loopson the belt for holding the object whichit is necessary. to carry, it being chiefly intended for use in carrying stretchers.

The object of my invention is to provide an improved device whereby an even distribution of the weight upon the shoulders, back,

and hips of the wearer is obtained without hindering the latter in the free use of his hands, so as to relieve the shoulders and hips.

l attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective front view of the carrying device; Fig. 2, a perspective back view thereof, and Fig. 3 a perspective side view of a special modification of the device.

The improved carrier-strap consists of a belt (1, provided with a buckle b and two shoulder-straps c, rigidly attached by their rear ends to the said belt at (I, while their front ends are provided with buckles e for securing them adj ustably to the front part of the belt a. At the fore part of the belt a and advantageously at both sides of the shoulderstrap attachments fare fixed the ends of loopstraps for holding the stretcher, and such loopstraps may be formed of two portions 0, and h, adjustably secured together by buckles g. In all the views of the drawings said loops are shown as not closed.o'. a, the portions t' are not attached tothe buckle g. Under normal conditions, however-that is to say, when the device is being used for. carrying a stretchersaid portions 2' and h must be attached toeach other by means of the buckle g, so as to form a real loop for the ends of the poles of the stretcher to be laid in.

According to the slightlymodified form shown in Fig. 3 the ends of the shoulderstraps c are not fixed to the belt at d, as in Figs. 1 and 2, and are prolonged downward to form theloop-strapshfor attachment to the front ends 1, fixed atthe front of the belt a.

The advantages of myimproved device as compared with other similar means consist mainly in the fact that the burden, independent of any aid from the hands, is well divided over the shoulders, back, and hips of the bearer and without inconvenience to the chest, while, moreover, the weight which is borne bythe shoulders and back in proportion can be regulated as may be desired. I By tightening the belt a as far as can beior exple, very tight-around the body of the bearer the largest portion of the weight will be on the hips or carried by the hands of the bearer. If, however, the belt be loosened to some extent, the weight will partly be borne by the shoulders and back of the bearer, and by adjusting the belt very loosely around the body the weight will all hang on the shoulders and body of the bearer, if no account is taken of the support aiforded by the hands.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

r In combination, a belt, shoulder straps crossing at the back and secured to the back of said belt at their rear ends, adjustable connectionsbetwcen the front ends of said straps and the front portion of said belt, an adj ustable connection for the ends of said belt and loops connected to said belt and comprising a pair of straps h secured one to each side of the belt where it rests on the hips and a second pair of straps o' secured to the belt near the adjoining ends, said straps h and 01 having means for detachably connecting their free ends, substantially as described.
