Description

@atten tetra gattnt @Hita D. C. SAGE, O MIDDL-ETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 70,748, dated November 12, 1867.
Iurnovnn coNsTnUcTIoN or BUTT-,unions ttge rtehnle teftmt tu in tigen @etten @mit nu mating artt ni ttt same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CO'NCERN:
Bc it known that I, D. C. SAGE, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex,vand-State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Hinge; and I-do hereby declare ,that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a pax-tof this specification, in which- Figure 1 isa face view of the improved hinge.
Figure 2 is an inside view of -the same with removable plates attached.'
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken in the plane indicated by red line a: in iig. 2.
Figure 4 is an end view of iig. 2.
Figure 5,is a sectional view through the eye of a hinge, showing washers applied to it.
Figure 6 is a horizontalsectional viewof the hinge of iig. 5.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in theseveral figures.
The first part of my invention provides for securing a butt hinge to a door-casing, and also to the door thereof, inv Isuch manner as not to exposethe heads 'of the retaining-screws, by meansof plates which are secured to the casing and door, and which are adapted for receiving hooks that are cast on the back faces of the leaves of the hinge, as will be hereinafter described. A
The second part of my invention consists in the application of hardened-metal washers between the .eyes of the hinge, in such mannerasto prevent the hinge from readily wearing at such points, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the a'r't to understand my invention, I'will describe its constructionand operation.
The hinges which I have represented in the drawings may be made of the well-known shape of door or shutter butthinges, and of any suitable size. p
The iirst .part'of the invention is more particularly applicable to ornamental door-hinges, where it is desired to have them present a handsome appearance when on the door. Instead of casting the leaves of the hinges with holes through them, as shown in ii 5, I cast a suitable number of hooked projections, da, upon the back surfaces `of each leaf A. The hooks on one leaf aredirected upward, and those on the opposite leaf are directed downward, as shown in iig. 2. The projections a a may be made of the rectangular form shown, or of any other form whichA will afford the greatest strength and convenience of attachment. In conjunction with a hinge thus constructed, I usc plates of steel or wrought metal, as shown at B B, which may be made quite thin, and which may he equal to o'r a little lessin length than the length of the leaves of the hinge. By means of suitable dies, I form rectangular holes through these plates B B, slightly larger than the hooks a a, but corresponding in arrangement and distance apart to these hooks. At intermediate points betweenthe holes through plates B, for receiving the hooks a, I make countersunk holes for receiving the screws,by which these plates are rigidly secured to the door and door-casing previously to hanging. the door. The plates having been secured to the door and its casing, it will be avery simple operation to hook on the hinges and hang the door. v
The second part of my invention consists in casting the hinges with circular recesses in the ends of their eyes c c, as shown in gs. 5 and 6, into which are fitted perforated steel or other hardened-metal disks, d d,
which aiford abutments or bearings for the adjacent eyes of the hinge, and prevent -theseabuttin'g surfaces from readily wearing out and allowing the door to sag and the hinge to work loose.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.. The attachment of butt-hinges to door-casings and doors, by means of hooksand plates, substantially as described.
2. The construction of the-leaves of hinges with hooks a a, or their equivalents, upon them, for being received by' perforated plates B, substantially as described.
3. The washers-d, of hardened metal, and detached from the pintle of the hinge, applied in recesses at the joints of the hinge, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
` D. C. SAGE.
