DISPLAY-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 706,929, dated August 12, 1902..
Application filed February'fl, 1902. Serial No. 92,834. (No model.)
TOLtZZ whom zit may concern.-
. Be it known that LBENJAMIN N. GRIMSHAW,
act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to display-racks, and more particularly to a device for displaying wall-paper in roll and also wall-paper bound in book form.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, compara: tively inexpensive of production, and one which in use may be adjusted to various positions, whereby different shadows and lights may be thrown upon the paper and the pro spective purchaser be given a'better opportunity to make a selection.
With this and other objects inview the ina perspective view of my improved, displayrack, showing the two shelves adjusted and one supporting the end of a roll ofpaper and the other supportinga book of samples. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal verticalsectional view through the same parts, the shelves being lowered in a position out of use. Fig. 3 is a detailperspective view of the combined bookholder and binge.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the supporting standard or pedestal, provided with a base 2 of suitable construction 3 denotes a head in the form of a tray or receptacle swiveled to the upper end of the post or pedestal and-having side pieces 4. a
5 denotes a shelf extending the full width of the tray or receptacle and connected to the upper edges of the side pieces thereof by hinges 6. One or more rolls of paper are adapted to be placed in the tray or receptacle 1 3 and the end unwound from the roll and spread upon the shelf 5 for display.
7 denotes a shelf hinged at 8 to the tray and consisting of two parts 9 and 10. The parts 9 and 10 are connected together by combined book-supports and hinges ll, consist ing of a U-shaped frame 12, into. which the back of the book is adapted to be placed, the horizontal fixed portion 13, which is secured .tothe lower cross-piece of the section 9 of the shelf, and the horizontally-disposed portion 14, which is hinged to the upper end of the vertical part 15 of the book support and is provided at its outer end with a downwardly and inwardly curved stop 16, which when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1 abuts against the part 15 of the support and holds the section 10 at an angle to the sec- .tion 9, as shown in Fig. 1; but when the shelf 7 is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 2
the parts thereof are allowed to swing into alinement, and thus be out of the way and permit of compact storage or transportation. As many of these combined book-supports and hinges may be employed as may be desired.
In displaying the bound samples the back of the book is placed in the support and opened, one cover resting upon the section9 of the shelf, while the other cover rests upon the section 10 of the shelf. The sample leaves of the book may now be turned in either direction and will be supported in such position as to be readilyinspected bythe prospective purchaser.
I will now describe the means for swinging the shelves outwardly at an angle to the pedestal 1 and retaining the shelves in their adjusted position. These means comprise arms 17, which are the one pivoted to the section 9 of the shelf 7 and the other pivoted to the shelf 5. The inner ends of these arms are preferably bent or curved and are pivoted to friction-shoes 18, the inner faces of which are curved to partially surround the pedestal or standard 1. ed at one end to 1ugs20, cast onsaid chains, and extend up'and overguide-pul1eys21,'-secured to the bottom of the tray or receptacle- 3, and afford means for elevating said shoes;
Chains or cords 19 are connectthe post or pedestal, and a shelf consisting of ,gether, substantially as set forth.
friction-shoe through the medium of the arms 17, and thus frictionally hold said shaft to the post or pedestal 1. The shelves may be lowered by grasping the arms 17 at their lower ends and pulling them downwardly.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation. Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent; isr 1. A display-rack comprising a post or pedestal, a head supported by the upper end of two parts arranged at angles to each other, one part being pivoted to the head, and a book-back-receiving frame for connecting the adjacent ends of the parts of the shelf to- 2. A display-rack comprisinga post or pedestal, a head supported by the upper end of back-receiving frame for connecting the adjacent ends of the parts of the shelf together,
and means for adjusting the shelf at various angles with respect to the post or pedestal, substantially as set forth.
3. A display-rack comprising a post or pedestal, a head supported at the upper end of the post or pedestal, a shelf consisting of two parts, one part hinged to the head, and combined book-supports and hinges, each cona sisting of a U-shapedframe having a lateral extension adapted to be secured to the inner part of the shelf, and a hinge extension adapt ed to be secured to the outer part of the shelf and provided with a stop adapted to abut against the U-shaped frameand support the outer partof the shelf at an angle to the inher part, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENJAMIN GRIMSHAVV.
