PLAYING-BALL.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 705,764, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed June 14, IB02.
pecially those intended for the game of golf io and its object is to improve the construction with a view to renderingthe shell more stable and increasing the iiying power of the ball.
` In the drawings forming part of this speciication, Figure l isa part-sectional view of a i5 ball made in accordance `with my present improvements; and Fig. 2 shows a hemispherica'l perforated blank of hard rubber, metal, orl
other hard springy material used in making a compound shell.
In the preferred manner of practicing,y my invention I inclose a filling, preferably of soft rubber and in the form of a solid sphere l, in a shell which consists of inner and outerlayers 2 and 3 of plastic material, preferably :'5 gutta-percha, and an intervening perforated layer 4 of more stable material, preferably hard rubber, the gutta-percha filling the perforations, as at A. At Fig. 2 is shown a h`emispherical segment B, a pair of which may be 3e employed to form the layer 4 of the shell.
The outer layer 3 of gotta-percha` is prefer ably incased in a compound layer of woven fabric 5 and celluloid 6. The shell, including the parts 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 and designated in a i 3 5 general way by O, preferably holds the filling l under a high degree of compression. By means of the hard insertion 4th@ gutta-percha shell is greatly reinforced, so that liability of the shell becoming misshapen when given a 4o heavy blow is minimized, While said layer 4,
owing to Vtheperforations, is somewhat iieXible, thereby yielding when the ball is struck and by reason of its resilience aiding materially in the flight thereof. AIt will also be seen that the compound'shell by reason of being mounted upon a yielding sphere or filling is supported and reinforced throughout, thereby producing a nearly -indestructible ball all of the parts whereof conduce to its ily 5o ing power, While the compound shell is sufliciently stiff to render the ball dead under a light blow.
Serial `No. 111,761. (No model.)
Portions of my invention may be used with= out;others,-as, for instance, the fabric and celluloidlayers 5 and 6 may be omitted or gutta-percha may be substituted for the celluloid-audit will further be understood that so longas a hard perforated layer is embedded within a gatta-porcina shell and near the periphery thereof it is not essential always kthat said sphere be provided with a center piece, as 1, nor that it be always in the form of a shell.
Having described my invention, I claim-Q 1. The combination with a springy filling, of a shell comprising layers of gutta-percha, hard rubber, celluloid and fabric, said hardrubber layer being inclosed within one of the other layers.
2. A playing-ball comprising a gutta-percha sphere between the inner and outer surfaces of which is embedded a shell of harder resilient material; said shell being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha sphere.
3. A playing-ball comprising a gutta-percha sphere between the inner and outer surfaces of which is embedded a shell of harder resilient material; said harder sphere being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha sphere, and the latter being provided with a filling of yielding material.
" 4. Aplaying-ball comprisingagutta-percha shell in which is embedded a perforated shell of harder resilient material; said harder shell being between the outer and inner surfaces of said gutta-percha sphere, and the latter being provided with a filling, and holding said filling under compression.
5. Aplaying-ballcomprisingagutta-percha sphere in which is embedded a shell of thin hard rubber; said shell being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha sphere. 6.' Aplaying-ball comprisinga gutta-percha shell in whichis embeddeda shell of4 harder .resilient material; said harder shell being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha shell, and the latter being filled with a sphere of soft rubber. y l
7. A playing-ball comprising a gutta-percha sphere in which is embedded a perforated shell of harder resilient material, said shell being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha sphere, and portions of said sphere lying with in and without said shell.
IOO
8. A playing-ball comprising a gutta-percha sphere in contact With which is embedded a perforated shell of harder resilient material; said harder shell being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha sphere, and the latter being provided with a lling.
9. Aplaying-ballcomprisingagutta-percha sphere in which is embedded a shell of harder resilient material; said shell being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha sphere; and a fabric-lined casing of Celluloid upon said gutta-percha sphere.
l0. A playing-ball comprising a gutta-percha shell in which is embedded a shell of hard rubber; said harder shell being close to the periphery of said gutta-percha shell, and the latter being filled With a sphere of soft rubber which is held under compression by said gutta-percha shell.
ll. A playing-ball comprising a soft-rubber sphere and layers thereon of gutta-percha, hard rubber and Celluloid, one of said guttapercha and Celluloid layers inclosing said hard-rubber layer.
12. A playing-ball comprising a gutta-percha sphere in which is embedded a perforated shell of harder resilient material; said shell being close to the periphery of said gatta-percha sphere; and a layer of Celluloid upon said sphere.
13. A playing-ball comprising a shell of gutta-percha in which is embedded a perforated shell of harder resilient material; said harder shell being between the inner and outer sides of said gutta-percha shell, andthe rlatter being provided with a filling, and be ing also reinforced by a layer of fabric.
14. A playing-ball comprising a guttaper cha shell in which is embedded a perforated shell of hard rubber; said gutta-percha shell being provided with a filling, and holdin g said filling under compression, and a casing of fabric-lined celluloid upon said gutta-percha shell.
15. A playing-ball comprising a sphere of soft rubber, a shell thereon consisting of gutta-percha and holding said soft-rubber sphere under compression, a perforated shell of hard rubber embedded in said gutta-percha shell and a casing consisting of celluloid and fabric upon said gutta-percha shell.
