UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.)
ARTHUR J. HAYOOX, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
ELECTRIC SIGNAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.:'705,583, dated July 29, 1902.
Application filed April 10, 1902.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J HAYCOX, of Mansfield,in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Signals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in electric signals, the object of the invention being to provide a signal for street-car lines adapted to be operated by prospective passengers for the purpose of signaling an approaching car.
A further object is to provide a signaling apparatus for the purpose stated which shall be simple in construction, which shall have its parts properly protected from the weather, and which can be readily operated by any one.
A further object is to so construct and'arrange the apparatus that current from the trolley-wire can be utilized for lighting it and so that the removal of the hand of the operator from the switch after a car has been sigi alptd will result in the extinguishment of the A further object is to provide a signal for the purpose stated which will be practical and effective in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts,as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
The accompanying drawing is a view in elevation, illustrating my invention.
five (more or less) incandescent lamps 6, arranged within the casing, and these lamps are arranged in series with each otherand with a feed or supply wire 8, connected with the Serial No. 102,295. (No model.)
trolley-wire 3 or a feed-wire. A fuse-box 9 is located'within the box or casing and conconnected with a ground-wire 14, which extends downwardly through a pipe-section 15, secured to the lower portion of the pole. The lever 12 carries acontact-arm 16 to engage the contact-blocks 14 when said lever is depressed for the purpose of closing the circuit, including the signal-lamps. A spring 17 is attached to the switch'lever and to the box 11 for the purpose of raising said lever, and thus opening the circuit of the signal lamps when the operator removes his hand from the handle of said lever.
With the use of my improvements 2. prospective passenger can readily signal an approaching car, it being simply necessary for him to depress the switch-lever to light the signal-lamps, and when he discovers that the motorman onthecar will respect his signal and bring the car to a stop he will release the switch-lever, andjthe spring 17 will raise the latter to open thesignal-light circuit.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an apparatus for signaling cars, the combination with a line conductor, ofa signal-box, a lamp locatedin said signal-box'and having one terminal permanently. connected with the .line conductor, a switch -box, a switch-lever pivoted therein, aconductor permanently connecting the other terminal of the lamp with said switch-lever, a contactblock in the switch-box to cooperate with said switch-lever, a conductor connecting said contact-block with the ground, and means for normally holding the switch-lever away from the contact-block to maintain the lamp-cm cuit normally open.
2. In an apparatus for signaling cars, the combination with a casing having Windows and an electric lamp in said casing, of a switchbox to be located in proximity to the roadbed, a pipe connecting said switch-box with said casing, a switch within said switch-box, a pipe connecting said switch-box with the ground, a feed-wire for the lamp in the cas ing, a wire extending through the first-mentioned pipe and connecting the lamp with the switch in the switch-box, and another wire extending through the pipe below the switchbox and connecting the switch with the ground.
8. In an apparatus for signaling cars on an ARTHUR J. HAYGOX.
