SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,308, dated July 8, 1902.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. L. EVANS,

siding at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pedal Devices for Bass- Drums and Cymbals, of which the following is a specificatiom This invention relates to improvements in pedal devices for bass-drums and cymbals.

The object of this invention relates to an improved construction and arrangement of parts of the pedal device for bass-drums and cymbals to provide a superior means for attaching and separating the parts of the pedal device for portable purposes and for rapidly remounting or putting together said parts when required to be used and for purposes hereinafter specified.

Certain essential features are pointed out in the claim of the specification.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the bass-drum and cymbal pedal and heaters and also shows the drum secured therewith as ready for playing. Fig. 2 represents a front elevation of the same, the bass-drum being omitted. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of the same through the trunnion of the drum-stick and cymbalbeaters, the rear parts omitted, the section being taken at the line a a shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detached front view of the lower portion and bed-plate of the pedal, the bottom end of the cymbalholder shown bisected. Fig. 7 represents a side view of one of the clamps to secure the rim of the drum. Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the joint of the foot of the cymbal-holder, and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the joint on the base-plate E to match the joint of the cymbal-holder.

A represents the bass-drum, and A the cymbal.

The plane of motion of the pedal and drumstick is central and right angular with the face or "ellum of the drum. The pedal device has a wood base-plate B. To the front end of this plate is secured the top end of the drum in a vertical position, presenting the vellum toward the drum-sticks of the pedal device. drum to the pedal device said plate B is provided on its front ends and facing the head of the drum with two projecting horizontal slotted metal clamping-plates O O, which allow the rim of the drum to enter the slots of said plates C. These are provided with setscrews D for clamping said rim, and thereby securing the drum firmly, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

The pedal device has a horizontal metal base-plate E, secured by screws 6 6 upon the wood plate 13. Said plate E has at its rear end two upward vertical posts i 1, between which the pedal-lever F for operating the drum-stick Gr and cymbal beater II is arranged longitudinally and is guided by a fulcrum-pin j through the pedal-lever F and having its ends projecting and guided into said posts "i '2 Upon a suitable portion of the forward end of the plate E are provided two vertical posts g g, in which the fulcrum-arborI of the cymbal-beater H and drum-stick G is guided, and said arbor I has upon it secured the hub K with the tilting arm L, which is operated by and rests with its outer end upon the short end of pedal-lever F. In said hub K are secured the inner ends of both the drum-stick arm or rod on and the cymbal-beater rod or arm n, of which the drum-stick arm on is made of strong round steel wire and the cymbalbeater arm of square steel rod. The tilting arm L is pressed down upon the short end of the pedal-lever F by means of the spring 0, which is coiled on both ends over a projecting part of the fulcrum-arbor I of each of its ends beyond the posts g. The central portion of said spring 0 passes over the end of the tilting arm L to press it down, while each end of the spring is held by a stud 1) below the arbor I on the posts g 9;

For solidly holding the inner ends of each the rod or of the drum-stick and the rod or of the cymbal-beater II in said hub K a strong set-screw Z for each is provided in said hub K. The drum-stick rod m is made with an offset m near its inner end in the direction toward the drum to place the outward part of the rod with its beater-head G in a tangent position from a radial line toward the drum, whereby the beater-head G meets the vellum with its largest periphery and places the rod in striking the vellum in an almost parallel position with the vellum similar to the ordinary drum-stick when operated by hand, and thereby producing the best sound. The rod 17. of the cymbal-beater is bent rearward to stiffen the rod against its blow from a radial line from the fulcrum to its head y, as shown, and the outer end of the rod has a bend to ward the cymbal. Said end is provided with a screw-thread,and the beater-head y is drilled and threaded to fit over said threaded end of the rod carrying the head y of the cymbalbeater, and said head in turning may be adjusted to or from the cymbal, and thereby the sound may be suitably graduated.

P represents the cymbal-holder, and it consists of an upward inclined arm having on its top end a suitable screw-threaded stud N, projecting" horizontally several inches out rearward from the drum, and over said stud N are provided felt and leather washers, between which the cymbal A is placed and pinched and solidly held. The cymbal-beater strikes the cymbal not far from its periphery, as shown. The bottom end of the said holder is made with a flathorizontal face to rest upon the wood base-plate B. The bottom of the aforesaid base-plate E at the junction with the side of the holder P has the fiat spaces or notches R R removed or cut from its bottom, as shown in Fig. 9, and the bottom end of the holder has a .projectinp; tongue 03 to match for each said spaces R, as shown in Figs. 6, 8, and 9, and the said base-plate E has a horizontal stud T projecting into an opening S made for said stud in the bottom end of said holder and is provided with a suitable set-screw f, by which means the holder is jointed to the plate E and firmly secured by the set-scrcwf, while pinching the stud in the opening S. As soon as the said screw is released the holder is ready for removing". By these means the cymbal-holder and the dru m-stick and cymbal-beater are all attached to the bed-plate and are made detachable and portable and convenient for carrying about, and the sound of the drum is not interfered therewith, as by attaching the cymbal direct to the drum.

That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a pedal device for playing the bassdrum and cymbal, the combination of the pedal-lever and its basc-plate,with the clamps for attaching the drum and a detachable cymbal-holder, a cymbal-beater and drum-stick on one pivot-lever and the pedal-lever engaging' said pivot-lever to operate both said beater and drum-stick.
