SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,409, dated July 1, 1902.

I The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective means for bordering a register-box and for centering all the parts correctly without respect to the hole in the wall or floor with which the register is to be used.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a border-plate with my improved construction. Fig. 2 is a-section on the plan of the line X X, Fig. 1, said View intending also a side elevation of the register-box; Fig. 3 is a relatively enlarged portion of the borderplate, showing in perspective a detail of construction. 4

C is a top plate which may be suitably connected to the register-box and which serves as a shoulder to rest upon the inner edge of the border-plate, whereby said register-box is 40 supported. 7

In practice it is desirable to cut the hole in the floonB as large as possible in order that there may be as much air-space around the register-box and between the register-box and the fioor as possible, therebylessening the danger of conflagration. Inasmuch as the hole in the fioor is very much larger than the register-box, I provide centering devices or lugs D D, preferably located at the corners of the border and on the under side of the same,

which lugs perform the function or means to hold the border-plate from displacement in the fioor-opening,said lugs being so positioned as to properly fit the said opening.

D is an angular projection, preferably formed integrally with the metal forming the lugs D D, the function of which angular projection D is to extend inwardly at the corners from the border-plate and engage the register-box C, which is preferably smaller than the opening in the border, but of such a size as to fit between the angular projections D.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the bord er-plate is centered relatively to the fiooropening, and the register-box is centered relatively within the opening in the border. Consequently neither the box nor the border plate can be disturbed or thrown out of their correct position by rolling furniture over said border-plate or by other severe uses. By this means the parts are correctly positioned at all times.

One great advantage due to the foregoing construction is that a very considerable amount ofmetal is saved in the construction of the parts, a feature of recognized value and importance.

I preferably form the border-plate of a pluralityof strips secured together and having their inner edge depressed, as at E E, to form a ledge upon which the top plate 0 of the register-box may rest flush with the surface of the border.

The centering means may preferably be 8 5 formed of a separate piece of metal, so that the same may be secured by rivets or other- By depressing the inner edge of the border-plate and by locating the rivets F F so that their heads stand above the depressed portion E the same are invisible when the parts are'a'ssembled-that is, when the register-box is in place. What I claim is 1. A border-plate for registers, ventilators and the like comprising a frame having an opening adapted to receive a register-box, the inner edge of said borderplate being depressed to provide a supporting-shoulder for said box, a device carried by said depressed portion, said device projecting downwardly to center the border with respect to the flooropening, said device being extended so as to center the box with respect to said border.

2. A border-plate for registers, ventilators, and the like, comprising an angular frame having an opening therein adapted to receive a register-box, said opening being substantiallylarger than the body portion of said bOX, a depression at the inner edge of said border to form a supporting-ledge for the top of said box, (loWnWardly-projecting lugs at the lower side of said border-frame to center the same relatively to the floor-opening, and inwardlyprojecting lugs at two or more angles of said opening adapted to engage with the registerbox and center it with respect to the borderframe.

3. A border-plate for registers, ventilators, and the like, comprising a rectangular frame, lugs carried thereby and extending downwardly therefrom and adapted to center said frame relatively to the opening in which it is to be placed, inwardly-directed lugs carried by said frame and adjacent the inner angles thereof and adapted to engage with and center the register-box of smaller external proportions than said opening.
