To all whmn it may concern: I

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J. FEILD, of Raleigh, in the county of \Vake and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extractors for Plug-Tobacco and other Articles; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as'will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The object of this invention is to provide simple and highly-eificient means whereby a single packed article may be separated or removed from its fellows without disturbing the latter.

The invention is especially applicable to plug-tobaoco,the difficulty in removing which from a box or caddy is well known. Such tobacco is usually packed very close, and in retailingit is customary to remove but one end of the box or caddy, so that the contents will not be exposed to too much air, the tendency of which is to dry the tobacco and render it unsalable. When but one end of the box is removed,much difficulty is experienced in separating the plugs as called for by customers, it usually being necessary to resort to the use of a chisel, corkscrew, or other instrument. By my invention it is sought to provide a separate extractor for each plug, such extractors being packedflvith the tobacco and so formed of flexible sheet metal that one end will be in engagement with one side of the plug and the other end extended over the ing passed over one end or edge of the plug.- By pulling on the outer or exposed end of the extractor, so as to separate it fromthe plug and throw the force of the pull against .the end or edge thereof, such plug may be readily removed without interfering with or injuring the other plugs, as often occurs where instruments have to be resorted to for extracting the tobacco. The extractor being made of thin sheet metal occupies but little space and may take the place of the tags whereon the trade-marks are usually applied.

The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows the application of my extractor to a plug of tobacco. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detached view. Fig. 4 shows the tobacco packed in a box or caddy with my extractor applied to the severalplugs.

The extractor is shown as consisting of a thin flexible strip 1, preferably of tin, having an inner fold or member 2 for engaging the under or inner side of the plug and then bent at 3 over one end or edge, terminating in a longer fold or member 4, which normally bears down upon the outer or exposed face of the tobacco. I have shown the inner fold or member 2 as having teeth 5, which enter a short distance Within the plug, while the free end of the outer fold or member is slightly turned up, as at 6, so that if such fold becomes embedded in the tobacco it may be easily removed without injuring the finger of the operator.

It is obvious from what has been said that by pulling upon the outer fold or member of the extractor a plug of tobacco may be readily removed or loosened from its fellows. In raising the outer fold the strip will exert a direct pull on the plug, at the edge thereof, the undenfold ap d the portion connecting the plug until removed. If the metal from which the extractor is formed is sufficiently stiif, the teeth 5 may notbe necessary, it being desirable to dispense with their use when the extractor is employed in the packing of articles which might be injured by such teeth. It will beunderstood thataseparate extractor is provided for each article, as shown in Fig. 4, where each plug is equipped with its own extractor. The metal composing the latter being very thin, but little space is taken thereby in packing.

It is apparent that extractors made in accordance with my invention can be manufactured at a very slight cost, which is more than offset by the advantages derived from their use, and that if the trade-marks are placed thereon the cost of separate tags is saved.

I claim as my invention 1. An extractor for plug-tobacco, designed to be applied to each plug and packed therewith, consisting of a thin strip of flexible material bent to form inner and outer folds or members, which extend over the inner and outer sides, respectively, of the plug, the connecting portion between the two folds ormembers being passed over one end or edge thereof, said outer fold being drawn outwardly away from the plug in removing the latter, as set forth.

2. As an article of manufacture,an extractor for plug-tobacco and other articles designed to be applied to each article and packed therewith, consisting of a flexible strip having inner and outer folds or members and an intermediate connecting portion, said inner fold or member having teeth at its inner end, the outer end of the outer fold or member being bent or turned up, as and for the purpose set forth.
