SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,699, dated June '3, 1902.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. FIRM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ohicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines, of which thefollowing is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1' shows the printing mechanism constructed for printing in a single color on four webs. Fig. 2 shows the same constructed for printing on. three websand with two or more colors printed on the outside of one web. Fig. 3 shows the machineconstructed for printing on two webs with'fourcolors on the outside of one of them. Fig. 4shows the folding mechanism detached. Fig. 5 is a vertical section in a plane through W of Fig. 4. Fig. 6shows a modification with the webs passing over the top of the carrier W W instead of underneath, as shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7shows means for adjusting the carrier W or W on the shaft w.
Fig.1 described Here are shown four printing mechanisms, one above another, with the cylinders of each arranged in a horizontal plane. A, B, G, and D are the four webs to be printed'and associated between the rollers 5 6. The webA passes between the guide rollers land 2, thence between the impres-' sion-cylinder E and form-cylinder F, where it is printed on one side, thence between the impression-cylinder G and form-cylinder H, where it is printed on the opposite side, thence between the rollers 3 and 4, where it meets the web B. From the guide -rollers 3 and '4-to the guide-rollers 5'and 6 the websA and B pass in a direct line, one lying upon After leaving therollers 11 and 12 the webs O and D, one lying npon the'other, pass between the guide-rollers 13 and 14 and thence-in a direct path between the rollers 5 and 6, where they pass under'the webs A and B and thence to the longitudinal folder. Each web is two pages wide, and each printing mechanism is adapted to print two pages abreast. I prefer to employ for folding the twoinversely-arranged longitudinal folders U-an'd'V, so arranged as that both of them deliver the longitudinally-folded products onto the carrier W W. By this arrangement and the arrangement of the guide-rollers 5 6 and-7 8, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, I am enabled to deliver the webs onto the carrier W W, either collectedso as to produce asingle product of sixteen pages or'so as to produce two products of eight pages each. When it is desired to produce a single product of sixteen pages, the longitudinal folder U is not used, and all four of the webs pass from the guide-rollers 5 6 over the longitudinal folder V, whereby three of the webs are folded inside of the fourth and delivered thus folded onto the carrier part W, by which they are alltransversely folded inside of each vother and cut transversely from the web, so asto deliver a completed product of sixteen pages. When it is desired to produce two products of eight pages each, both of the longitudinal'foldersU and V are employed. The webs Aand B pass from the guide-rollers 5 and 6 betweenthe guiderollers 7 and 8 and are foldedlongitudinally inside of each other by the longitudinal folder U, from which they pass ontothe carrier part W to be transversely folded and cut and delivered thereby as a product of eight'pages. The webs G and D pass from the guide-rollers 5 and 6 to the longitudinal folder V, by which they are longitudinally folded inside of each other and delivered to the carrier part \V, whereby they are transversely folded and cut and delivered as another product of eight pages. The dotted lines, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, show alternative web-leads that may be adopted in lieu of those shown in full lines.
The folding mechanism, shown in Fig. 1 is shown more in detail in Figs. 4, 5, and 6. 16 and 16 are the folding-rollers at the apex of the longitudinal folder U. 17 17 are the folding-rollers at the apex of the longitudinal folder V. The carrier part W and the mechanism for delivering therefrom is the same as the carrier part W, which is shown in Figs. 5 and 0. a a are transversely-cutting knives which cooperate with a matrix in the roller 30. b and b are pins to hold the forward end of the web, which pins are carried by the levers b and b operated by the cams c and c, attached to the folding-blades d and cl. The construction and mode of operation of these parts need not here be described in detail, since it is fully described in my Patent No. 556,409, dated March 17, 1896. From the rollers 16 and 16 the webs pass between the carrier \V and the tapes 29 and remain on the carrier until the transverse margin between the pages is opposite the opening between the rollers 30 and 31, when they are driven off of the carrier between those rollers and pass between the tapes 35 and the stripper 36 to the carrier Y, where the successive cuts are gripped by the grippers 33 and 34c and delivered onto the table composed of the belts 37, carried by the rollers 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, and 43.
The carrier parts W and W in operation move as onepart, being both fixed to the shaft 10; but for purposes of adjustment they are made separate from each other and each is loose upon the shaft and provided with a setscrew or other mechanical device whereby after it is rotated by hand upon the shaft to any desired position it may be fixed there. In this manner each of the carriers W and W may be set so as to receive properly the webs coming from its longitudinal folder, and when so set the two carriers will move together with positive accuracy. Each of the carriers may be adjustably secured to the shaft w by means shown in Fig. 7, which consists of the cross-head w, keyed to the shaft 'w by key 10 and slotted, so as to be adjustably secured to the carrier by the bolts 10 and w Fig. 2 described: The machine shown in this figure is adapted for printing and associating three Webs into a twelve-page paper, the outside of which is printed in two or more colors. The web B passes around the roller 9, thence between the impression-cylinder I and formcylinder J, where it receives on one side the color blue, thence between the impressioncylinder E and form-cylinder F, where it receives on the same side the color yellow, thence over the guide-rolls 1 and 2, thence between the impression-cylinder G and form-cylinder H, where it receives on the same side the color red, thence past the guide-roll17, thence between theimpression-cylinder K and formcylinder L, where it is printed on the opposite side in any color, thence between the guide-rollers 3 and 4, thence to the collecting-rollers 5 and 6, where it meets the other webs. The webs O and D are printed in the same manner as described for the webs C and D of Fig. 1 and conducted in the same manner to the guide-rollers 5 and 6, where they are associated with the web 13. From the rollers 5 and 6 all of the webs pass to the longitudinal folder V and are thereafter received by mechanism similar to that described in connection with Fig. 1. The printing mechanisms are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, excepting that the cylinders in the top row are geared to be driven in the opposite direction by intermediate gears, as is well known.

The web D passes over guide-roll 24E, thence between impression-cylinder Q and form-cylinder R thence between impression-cylinder S and form-cylinder T thence over guiderolls 19 and 20 and between guide-rolls 21 and 23, where it meets the web 0 Thence the two webs pass between the guide-rolls 5 and 6 to the longitudinal folder V.
It will be observed that where the printing is done in superposed colors, as in Figs. 2 and 3, the colors are placed upon the outside of the outside web and continued on the outside when the webs are folded at the longitudinal folder V. It will also be observed that in the printing mechanism shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 an inking mechanism is arranged at the end of each row, the inking-cylinders being lettered e fg h z' j Z. The two upper printing mechanisms in Fig. 1 show extra sets of fountain-rollers 'm and n, 0 and p, to be used when required for color-printing, the fountain-rollers g, r, s, and 6 being adjusted so as not to be in operation for color-printing, but being adjusted so as to be in operation when not color-printing.
