` LOUIS HUMMEL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ADOLF MAYER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AND SAMUEL FRIEDMAN,
BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 701,270, dated May 27, 1902.
` Application filed September 20, 1901' Serial No. 75.766. (N0 mOel-l To afl/Z whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs HUMMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing'in New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Belts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a belt as an article of apparel; and the object of the invention is to provide a belt with a backing-strip which underlies the buckle and is provided with loops adjacent its ends, so that the belt when buckled has additional attractiveness in its symmetrical appearance and, further, produces an even and broad interior surface of the belt at the buckle.
The invention consists of a belt for wearing around the waist, comprising the beltband, a buckle at one end, a backing-strip underlying the buckle and secured to the belt-band adjacent the buckle, and loopsone provided at each end of the backingstrip--for engaging the free end of the beltband and arranged each side of the buckle to give .a symmetrical appearance and a greater support to the free end of the belt-band.
The novel features and construction of the invention will be hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, in which` i Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved belt. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional view on line 2.2, Fig. l; and
Figs. 3 and Li` are transverse vertical sections of the belt on line 3 3 and line et 4, respectively.
Similar characters designate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the belt-band, provided at one end with the buckle B and the backing-strip (l. The strip C may be made separate from and stitched to one end of the beltband, orit may be made in one piece therewith, as described. The buckle B is secured in the usual manner to the belt-band A, and the backing-strip C is secured in the same operation of stitching the backturned end a of the belt-band. The strip C is of greater width than the belt-band and arranged so that the buckle B occupies approximately the middle part thereof and is also provided at its ends with the loops c and. c', the former of which is secured between the backing C and the belt-band A, and the latter has its ends c2 secured to the rear of the strip O by passing through the opening C adjacent opposite edges. Theseloopsc and c' are adapted to receive the end A of the belt-band and are arranged symmetrically in order to give a pleasing and symmetrical appearance tothe belt when buckled.`
The belt of the construction herein described possesses the usual simplicity of use and aiords an even interior surface under the buckle and at the same time adds an attractive feature in the symmetry of its con- VPatent- `l. A belt, consisting of a belt-band, abuekle at one end thereof, a backing-strip arranged under said buckle, and secured to the buckle end of said belt-band, and loops arranged at opposite ends of said backing-strip, substantially as set forth.
2. A belt, consisting of a belt-band, a buckle, a backingstrip of greater width than said belt-band, and arranged to lie under said buckle in an approximately central position, and a loop at each end of said backing-strip, substantially as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
