As herein shown, Fig. 1, the setting-die d normally stands in alinement with the punch rod 0., but is arranged to be positively moved out of the way during the downward or punching movements of the said rod, as shown in Fig. 2, where the punch is illustrated as having descended to perforate I the material. This movement may advantageously be obtained by connecting the arm (1 with the punch-rod a by means of a link d the pivotal support d of the arm (1 not having any longitudinal movement, so that the downward movement of the punch-rod a through the agency of the link (1 will swing the arm d to one side, so that the punch a can descend into contact with the surface of the material. At the end of the punchingoperation (illustrated in Fig. 2) the punch rises slightly, as described in my prior patent above referred to, so as to be released from contact with the support or anvil without, however, becoming disengaged from the material, the lateral feed movement then taking place, so that the parts are brought to the position shown in Fig. 3, in which the punch and the punched opening stand directly over the lower set 0. The punch then rises from the material, which at this period is held in position by means of the presser-foot e, and in rising causes the arm d to be swung on its pivot d until the upper set (1 comes into alinement with the punch-rod directly over the punched opening, as shown in Fig. 4. The lower set 0 then rises, the presser-foot e at the same time being lifted from the surface of the material to release the same, and the eyelet is clenched between the sets, as shown. The upper set is arranged to stand slightly above the surface of the material, so that an eyelet will be readily disengaged therefrom after it has been clenched, the presser-foot e descending prior to the return lateral movement of the punch, the upper set therefore being readily disengaged from the material during such return movement. In the next downward movement of the. punch the upper setting-die d is swung out of the way, so as not to interfere with the punching operation, and the operationsare repeated, as above described. By the construction shown it will be seen that the setting-die d has a positive rigid support independent of the punch a and a positive movement in both directions, so that it cannot fail to be properly positioned while the punch-rod a is relieved of the pressure during the setting operation.
The link (1 is shown as directly connected to a collar (i or equivalent adjusting device on the punch-rod a, the said collar being clamped to the punch-rod after being moved to the proper position to bring the setting-die directly over the perforation in the material prior to the setting operation. This construction or its equivalent constitutes adjusting means for the setting-die.
While the construction chosen as an illustration of the invention and herein shown is believed to be simple and practicable, it is not intended to limit the invention to such specific construction and arrangement, since modifications may obviously be made without departing from the invention.
I claim-.
1. In an eyeleting-machine, the combina tion with a punch having a longitudinal movement to punch the material; of a setting-die connected with a rigid support to thereby sustain the thrust; means for laterally moving said setting-die into and out of alinement with the longitudinal axis of said punch; and a cooperating setting-die, as set forth.
2. In an eyeleting-machine, the combination with a punch; of means for reciprocating said punch to perforate the material; a setting-die having a pivotal support which does not partake of the reciprocating movement of the punch; means for connecting the said punch with said setting-die wherebythe latter is swung into and out of alinement with the punch in response to the reciprocating movement thereof; and a cooperating seting-die, as set forth.
3. In aneyeleting-machine, the combination with a punch having a reciprocating movement; of alaterally-movable carrier for said punch; a setting-die having a pivotal connection with said carrier; means for swinging said die on said pivot into and out of alinement with said punch; and a cooperating setting-die, as set forth.
4. In an eyeleting-machine, a reciprocating punch; a setting-die having a support stationary with relation to the punch; adjustable means for connecting said die with said punch; and a cooperating setting-die, as set forth.
5. In an eyeleting-machine, a reciprocating punch; a setting-die having a pivotal support; a link connecting said punch with said die; and a cooperating settingdie, as set forth.
6. In an eyeleting-machine, a punch having a reciprocating movement; a laterally-movable carrier for said punch; a setting-die having a pivotal connection with said carrier; a link connecting said punch with said die; anda cooperating setting-die, as set forth.
