SHAVING-STICK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 700,947, dated May 27, 1902. Application filed March 5, 1901. Serial No. 49,928. (No model.)-
To rtZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DYER T. KENDRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving-Sticks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Like letters .indicate like parts. Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved case for shaving-soap. Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the same after the cover has been removed, thus exposing the upper end I 5 of the stick of shaving-soap for use. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of my said device. Fig.4 is a perspective view of the movable block and the spring thereon mounted in the circumferential groove of said block. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of said block as seen in a transverse plane in the line of said groove. that it shows the shaving-stick after it has been shortened by use and the movable block has been further pushed into the tubular case. My invention is a tubular case adapted to hold a stick or cylindrical piece of soap and provided with a push-block for moving said soap outwardly through the tube, in combi- 0 nation with a spring on said block arranged to hold said block in position in the tube, as hereinafter particularly described.
In the drawings, A represents a tubular case open at both ends. It is preferably made of metal and has an annular bead a near its upper end. A cap B fits upon said end of the tube, and when in position its edge is in contact with the bead a, as shown in Fig. 1.
C represents a cylindrical piece or stick of soap, preferably covered by the paper 0.
D is a cylindrical block having its ends plane and parallel with each other, and midway between its ends is a circumferential groove d. A spring-wire E is bent into a circular form of a diameter exceeding that of the block D and of the tube A and is mount- Fig. 6 is the same as Fig. 3, except the interior of the tube.
ed in said circumferential groove, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, with the ends 0 thereof a short distance apart. 7
When the spring E is compressed slightly, the block D is inserted into the open bottom of the tube A, as shown in Fig. 3, and the resilience of said spring causes said spring to bear forcibly against the tube on the inside thereof, causing 'suflicient friction to hold said block in position. The inner end of the piece or stick C of soap is in contact with the upper surface of the block D, all as illustrated in Fig. 3.
As the upper (exposed) end of the soap 0 is used and Worn down a slight pressure of the finger upon the bottom of the block D causes said block to move inwardly along the tube A, the friction of the spring E being thus overcome, and when said pressure of the finger ceases theblock D is held in the new position bythe force of the spring E and the consequent frictional contact thereof with In this manner the soap C is moved outwardly to expose it to the action of the brush for further use, as appears in Fig. 6.
Instead of making the case A tubular it may be oblong, oval, or angular in crosssection, in Which construction the block D would ,be of corresponding shape and the spring E adapted to operate accordingly.
I claim as a novel and useful invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent-=- 1. The improved shaving-stick herein described, consisting of a tubular case open at both ends, a cylindrical piece of soap fitting and movable in said tube, a cylindrical block having a circumferential groove and an arcshaped metallic spring mounted in each groove and having a diameter exceeding that of said case, all combined and operating substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
2. The improved shaving-stick herein described, consisting of a tubular case open at both ends and having an annular bead near one of its ends, a cylindrical piece of soap fit In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DYER T. KENDRICK.
block having a circumferential groove, an arc-shaped metallic spring mounted in said groove and having a diameter exceeding that of said case, and a cap covering the top of said case and in contact with said annular bead, substantially as specified.
ting and movable in said tube, a cylindrical I Witnesses: v
