WILLIAM FRECK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TABLET-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,758, dated May 27 1902.
Application filed September 5,1899. Serial No. 729,421. (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRECK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tablet-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in tablet machines for compressing powders and like substances into tablet form.
The invention aims tofurnish a machine of great capacity and convenient adjustment of its wearing parts; and to such end it consists in certain novelfeatures of construction and arrangement, a description of which will appear in the following specification and the essential features more definitely pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings furnished herewith by means of twelve figures, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine with the shaft in cross-section and one of its bearings cut away, the line of section being indicated at 1 l in Figs. 3 and 4. Fig. 2 is a side elevation looking at the opposite side of the machine with the shaft and its bearings cut away in line 22 of Figs. 3 and 4. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the' machine. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section in line 5 5 of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. dis a similar section in line 6 6 of Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 7 is a detail vertical section in line.7 7 of Figs. 3 and at. Fig. 8 is a detail vertical section in line 8 8 of Fig. 4. Fig. 9 is a detail View of a die-polishing mechanism used in connection with the machine. Fig. 10 is a detail vertical section in line 10 10 of Fig. 6. Fig. 11 is a horizontal section in line 11 11 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 12 is a detail vertical section in line 12 12 of Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the standard upon which the working parts of the machine are mounted, said standard being provided with a base-plate et, adapted to rest upon'a suitable table or other support. The upper end of the standard is bifurcated and formed with two journal-boxes a o in which is journaled the main driving-shaft B, carrying upon one end the fly-wheel b and upon the opposite end tight and loose pulleys 19 W. A belt-shifter?) is slidingly mounted in a bracket a secured to the upper end of the standard, said belt-shifter being provided with'a handle I), by means of which the belt may be thrown from one wheel upon the other. The shaft B is formed with two crank-plates B B (see Figs. 3 and 4) and a crank-pin B connecting said crankplates and adapted to give a reciprocating motion to the upper compressor, hereinafter described.
The upper compressor consists of a rod 0, reciprocating in a lug a extending out from the standard, said rod being secured at its upper end in a head 0 by means of a pin 0. (See Fig. 1.) A pin 0 is secured in the head 0 and is guided vertically in the lug a, as seen at c in Fig. 3. A screw-threaded pitman 0 is connected to the upper end of the head 0 by means of a ball-and-socket joint 0 the upper end of said pitman being adjustably securedin a block 0 which is mounted upon the crank-pin B from which the upper compressor receives its vertical reciprocating movement. In the lower end of the rod 0 is secured a compressor-pin G by means of a set-screw 0 the lower end of said pin being concaved or otherwise suitably shaped to produce the desired shape of one side of the tablet.
The die in which. the tablet is formed is seen at D in Figs. 3 and 6, said die being secured in a table A, extending laterally from the standard A and preferably formed integral therewith. The die is held in place by means ofa pin d, (see Figs. 10 and 11,) secured upon a plate d,"said pin extending through a hole (1 in the table "A and'clamped against the die by means of a screw 61 the plate d being formed with a shoulder d adapted to rest against the edge of the table, so that by tightening up the screw the pin (1 will impinge upon the die and securely hold the die in position. The die'is formed with an. opening conforming to the shape of the compressorpin 0, which may be'round or of any other suitable figure in cross-section. A lower compressor-pin E works in the lower portion of the die and is adapted to resist the pressure of the upper compressor upon the tablet and eject the tablet after it has been compressed. The lower compressor E is secured in a block e by means of a set-screw e, said block being vertically guided upon a pin 6 screw-threaded upon its lower end and threaded in a lug a rising from the base-plate a. A jam-nut e is threaded upon the lower end of the pin e to lock the same in place. The lower compressor receives its reciprocating motion from the main driving-shaft B by means of a cam 13, formed thereupon, (see Figs. 1, 3, and 4,) which engages a rod F, guided near its upper end in a lug a, and engaging a lever F at its lower end. The lever F is pivoted to the standard at f, and its forward end f engages the block 6 and raises the same as its opposite end is correspondingly depressed. A spring f is confined between the end f of the lever f and a block f secured to the standard and adapted to raise the rod F and the lever F as soon as the cam B passes by the rod F. An antifriction-roller f is secured upon the end of the rod F, and two nuts f f upon the rod furnish an adjustable bearing upon the lever.
The powder or other substance to be compressed is confined in a tank or reservoir G, suitably supported upon the standard and connected to the feeder H (see Figs. 6 and 10) by means of a flexible tube g. The feeder H consists, essentially, in a horizontally-oscillating block formed with'a channel or passage h, leading from the tube g to a point upon its lower surface which when the feeder is swung into the proper position will be coincident with the aperture in the die. A round projection 72, receives the tube g. During the compression of the tablet in the die the feeder is swung away from the same; but as soon as the lower compressor is raised to eject the completed tablet the feederis brought forward suddenly, striking the tablet and throwing it forward and down a chute a and into a suitable receptacle arranged below the same and at the same time'bringing the feeder immediately over the aperture in the die and permitting a quantity of powder to fall into the same. The oscillation of the feeder is accomplished by means of alever I, (see Fig. 2,) pivoted to the standard at 7;, its lower end engaging an upwardly-extending flange h of the feeder H. The lower end of the lever I is notched to embrace the flange h, and a springpressed pin 1' (see Fig. 12) rests upon the upper edge of the flange h andholds the feeder tightly down upon the upper surface of the table A, so as to prevent any powder from accidentally getting out between the feeder and table. The upper end of llhBwlGVOI I is provided with an antifriction-roller 2' resting against a flange B formed upon the shaft B. The flange B is formed with a notch B into which the upper end of the lever I may onter to permit the feeder II to be moved over the die, the feeder remaining away from same during the time in which the flange engages the arm I. A spring I is confined between the lower end of the lever I and a block a secured to the standard, and adapted to force the lever forward and the feeder over the die the instant. the upper end enters the notch in the flange B The upper end of the lever is, however, formed with a nose 1 adapted to strike the crank-plate B before the antifriction-roller i of the lever I reaches the bottom of the notch, said crank-plate being formed with a series of depressions B for engaging the nose I and giving to the lever and feeder a vibratory motion during the time in which the upper end of the lever I is in the notch 13", and consequently during the time in which the feeder is over the die, thereby insuring the proper feeding of the powder into the die. The feeding of the powder into the die may be stopped while the machine is in operation, if desired, bymeans of a knob J, secured upon a pinj, (see Fig. 5,) having a round headj,-one side of which is cutaway,
as seen 'at j in Figs. 3 and 5, leaving a flat side, past which the lever I may swing when the knob is in one position. By giving the knob a quarter-turn the head j is brought in front of the lever I and prevents its movement forward to bring the feeder over the die. The feeder is pivoted upon-a pin K ,(see Figs. 10 and 11,) extending up through the table A and held in place by means of an ec-' centric pin is. The pin K is formed with a groove 70', in which the eccentric portion 76 of the pin 70 enters when said eccentric pin is turned in position to lock the pin Kin place. The eccentric pin is provided with a handle it by means of which it may be m tated to engage the pin K.
It often occurs that the dies become clogged or roughened when in constant use, and to polish them I have provided a device for doing the same. Said device consists of a wheel W, adapted to be pressed against the fiy= wheel I) by a spring w, the wheel W being mounted upon a shaft w, journaled in a bracket 10 which is supported'upon the standard A, said shaft carrying upon its free end a polishing-spindle 4.0
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let= ters Patent* 1. The combination with the oscillating feeder, H, and the operatingrlever, I, of the spring-pressed pin, 1', guided in the lever and bearing upon the feeder to hold it in proper position; substantially as described.
2. The combination with the frame and driving-shaft, the die-table and the die, of the oscillating feeder upon the table, the lever, I,
springpressed to bring the feeder over the lower end and a curved flange upon the feeder adapted to engage the lever; substantially as described.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a horizontally-oscillating feeder, of a pivot-pin therefor, having a circumferential groove and an eccentric lockingpin journaled in the frame adjacent to the pivot-pin, the eccentric portion of said locking-pin being adapted to oscillate into or out of the groove in the pivot-pin; substantially as described.
5. The combination with the table and die, of the pin, d, entering the table and bearing upon the die, the plate, d carrying the pin at one end and having a shoulder bearing upon the table at the other and the screw, d
threaded in the table and clamping the plate,
01, thereto; substantially as described.
6. The combination with the frame and driving-shaft, of the compressor-rod,0, guided therein, the head, 0, upon the compressor-rod, the rod, 0 guided in the frame to. prevent the turning of the compressor-rod, the block, 0 eccentrically journaled upon the shaft and the pitman, 0 secured in the block and having a ball-and-socket joint, with the head, 0; substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Il1inois,vthis 2d day of September,
WILLIAM FRECK. Witnesses:
