To all whom, it may concern;

Be it known that I, EDGAR B. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts,have invented certain newand useful Improvemets in Tackle-Blocks, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention consists in a tackle-block of improved construction.

The objects of the invention are to produce a block of strong and simple construction and which can-be quickly taken apart and put together for the purpose of cleaning, repairing, and for changing its connections or fittings.

The purposes of the invention will be more fully stated in connection with the following detailed description.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

Figure 1 is an edge view, and Fig. 2 is a side` View, of an improved tackle-block constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a section on the line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an inside and Fig. 5 is an outside view of the combined strap and lining. Fig. 6 is an inside view of one of the cheek-pieces, and Fig. 7 is a section on the line B B of Fig. 4.

As illustrated in the drawings, my improved tackle-block comprises two metal parts a, each comprising a strap and a lining-plate, an intermediate sheave ZJ,-having bearings in the straps, and a pair of cheek-pieces c, which are preferably constructed of wood, hard rubber, or other light and durable material. Each of the straps ct has a central outwardly-projecting bearing 1 for the Sheave-axle 2. They are also provided with inwardly-projecting bosses 3 4, which are connected by screws 5 6 when the parts of the block are assembled. The bosses 3, and likewise the bosses 4, abut against each other and form shackles,to which hooks, ropes, or other fixtures maybe connected. The straps are also provided with inward projections 7 below the upper shackle, which abut and form an eye 8.

To each strap 9 is connected a lining-plate 10,which is coextensive with the cheek-pieces c. About the lining is a marginal iiange 11, which forms a finish and protection for the cheek-piece and also holds it against lateral movement.

The cheek-pieces c have plain convex surfaces on their outer sides, Without any rivets,

screw-holes, or other blemishes. This construction greatlyenhances their appearance and permits of their being scraped without dulling or nicking the scraping-tools. Thev cheek-pieces are fastened in place by screws 12, inserted from the inside of the linings. The cheek-pieces are provided with projecting portions 13,which fit within the recess 14 between the straps 9 and the marginal iianges 11. They overlap the flanges 11, so that said flanges do not Show in side elevation. (See Figs. 1 and 7.) They are also provided with circular recesses 15, into which the bearings 1 tit. The recesses are preferably made somewhat deeper than the bearings and are provided with disks of felt or other fabric 16 to hold lubricating material for the sheave.

In some sizes of blocks I prefer to make the linings 10 of stamped sheet metal and attach them by screws or rivets to the straps. In other cases, as shown in the drawings, the straps and linings are cast in one piece. It will be seen that all the parts of my improved block can be separated very quickly by simply taking out the screws 5, 6, and 12 and as quickly put together. This permits of the partsbeing easily repaired and cleaned, and also permits of attaching anydesired fitting to the block or changing the attachments at any time.

It will be seen that certain features of my invention are applicable to blocks having two or more sheaves-as for instance, the mode of attaching the cheek-pieces. Rollerbearings may be provided for the sheave by simply enlarging the bearing-rings 1 Suft`1- ciently to admit the rollers between the axles 2 and the bearings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A tackle-block comprising the straps, the sheave having bearings in the straps, the lining-plates connected to thestraps, and the cheek-pieces connected by inside fastening to the lining-plates and having unbroken outer surfaces.

inwardly-projecting bosses 3, 4, connected by screws 5, 6, a sheave mounted in bearings in said straps, lining-plates connected to the straps, and cheek-pieces connected to the lining-plates by inside fastenings, said cheekpieces having unbroken outer surfaces.
