SPECIFICATION forming; part of Letters Patent No. 697,806, dated April 15, 1902. Application filed March 20, 1900. Serial N0. 9,473. (No model.)
To (til whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BARNABAS J. CASTER- LINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olalla, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Crates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shipping crates adapted particularly to poultry, and has for its primary object to so construct a device of the character described that it will be adapted to be folded for reshipment.
A further object is to construct a folding.
crate which will have the requisite amount of strength when containing poultry and the like.
A still further object is to arrange the deck or partition intermediate the top and bottom so that the longitudinal edges thereof will be braced by the brace-rails of the sides of the crate.
With these objects in view my invention consists in certain parts and the peculiar combinations of parts, as will be specifically re ferred to hereinafter, pointed out in the appended claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, all forming a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 represents a front view of a crate constructed in accordance with my invention and set up. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is top plan View of the crate. Fig. at is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of crate folded. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the hinge. Fig. 9 is a horizontal section, on an enlarged scale, taken on a plane above the deck.
In carrying out my invention I provide a base or bottom 1, along the longitudinal edges of which are secured the sills 2 and 3, connected at one end by a transverse bar 4:. Two end sections 5 and 6 are hingedly secured to the ends of these sills by hinges 7 and 8. The hinges 7 comprise each a right-angular bar, to the vertical arm of which is connected a transverse strap 9, which is designed to be secured to the transverse bar 4-, and a leaf 10 is secured to the end section 5 and pivotally connected to the upright arm of the hinge by a pivot 11. The hinges 8 each comprise two leaves 12 and 12, pivoted at 13. It will be noticed that the end section 6 is secured to the sills at points flush with their ends, while the end 5 is hinged above the bar 4, thus the latter being somewhat smaller than its complementary member.
In hinging the top 14 to the respective end sections the end batten 15 is rabbeted at 16 to receive the top of the end 6, and the under sides of the batten 15 and the top rail of the end 6 are secured together by hinges 16,while hinges 7 connect the opposite end of said top with the top of the end section 5.
Two parallel braces 17 and 18 are arranged intermediate the ends of the top 14:, and a brace 19 serves to form an opening 20, closed by a suitable door and through which poultry can be removed from off the deck, to be hereinafter referred to.
The sides 21 and 22 are hinged, respectively, to the base 1 and to the top by hinges 23 and 24 and consist of rectangular frames 25 and 26,to which are secured longitudinally-arranged supporting-battens 27 and 28, one on each side, to rest under the longitudinal sides of the deck 29, so that the same will be suitably supported and to remove the strain from the hinges 30 and 31, which connect this deck to the end sections 5 and 6. Cut-out portions are provided at the corner of the deck to receive end rails of the side sections above referred to.
An opening 32 is provided in the side 22 for removing the poultry from the batten of the crate.-
In folding the crate for reshipment it will assume the position shown in Fig. 7, the side 22 resting upon the crate-top and securely fasteuedby a hook 33, connected to the bot tom of'said crate, while the side 21 rests under the bottom and is securely held in such a position by a hook on the other side depend ing from the top.
It will thus be noticed that the entire crate, deck and all, are arranged to fold one upon the other,'so that the liability of any of the parts being lost is reduced to a minimum.
Slight changes in the construction relating to minor details might be made Without departing from the spirit of this invention, and I reserve the right to make such changes as would properly come within the scope of the following claim Without affecting or departing in any Way therefrom.
I claim- A folding crate comprising a, top, bottom, and end sections hinged together; a deck or partition hinged to said end sections and cut away at its corners; and sides hinged respectively to the top and bottom sections, the end rails of which fit the cut-out corners of the deck; and longitudinal battens arranged 1o centrally of the sides and fitting under the side edges of the deck.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
