Description
JAMES MCCAIKTY, OFl READING,
PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED LAP AND BUTT WELDED TUBE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,956, dated December 18, 1849.
To all lwhom t may concern Be it known that I, JAMES MCCARTY, of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Making lVrought- Iron Pipes, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known and of the usual manner of making, modifying, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the improvement is shown.
In making wrought iron tubes by machinery, a lap-welded joint is found very difficult to form; while a but-weld is comparatively easy; but pipes made by the latter plan cannot be used in certain cases, as for instance, for stretching or turning out, to forni a flanch, or bending to form a curve; while for all other purposes it is as useful as the more expensive lap-weld. My improvement consists in forming pipe which has the advantages of both, by combining the two in the same pipe. I form a but-weld upon the pipe throughout the whole length, except about siX or leight inches at each end; this part I then scarf and lap over, and Weld with a regular lapweld, and the pipe is completed by drawing in the usual way. The ends are when thus constructed fitted to draw and turn as occasion requires, the strength Afor which is only wanted at the ends.
Having thus fully described my improve ments, in wrought iron pipes, I wish it to be understood that I do not claim either a butwelded or lap-welded joint therein, as they are both old devices; but
Vhat I do claim is- A pipe composed of a combination of the but-weld, with lapfwelded ends, as above particularly set forth.
JAMES MCCART'Y.
