UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES CANDLISH, OF RAVVLlNG-S, lWYOll/HNG.
BOLT CUTTER AND TRIMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 694,829, dated March 4, 1902.
Application tiled August 8, 1901.
To all whom, t may concern:
rBe it known that I, JAMES CANDLISH, aeitizen ofthe United States, residing at Rawlings, in the county of Carbon'and State of Wyoming, haveinvented newand useful Improvements in Bolt Cutters and Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bolt cutters and trimmers.
The invention aims to construct a bolt cutting and trimming device which is strong and durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely elfective in operation by reason of the fact that the strain is equally. applied to all the, parts and less power is required to operate the cutting or trimming jaws than is necessary with devices of this character now in common use; and to this end the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specitically described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in whichl Figure lis a top plan View of my improved bolt cutting and trimming device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 isan inverted plan view with the handle broken away.
Referring to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 indicates a top plate, and 2 a bottom plate. At the forward end of the plates 1 and 2 is a pair of end cutters 3 4, provided with Shanks 5 6. The latter are arranged between the plates 1 and 2 and also pivotally connected thereto by means of the pins or studs 7 8, these studs extending through the forward'portion of the plates, as shown.. The cutting-jaws 3 4 project outwardly from the forward end of the plates 1 and 2 andare each provided with a reinforcing end 9. The inner portion of the Shanks 5 6 of the end cutters are arranged between the plates 1 2 and have a portion of their edge toothed, as at 10.
The reference-numerals 11 12 denote han- Serial No. 71,377. (No model.)
dies, each having its inner face provided with an offset 13,v forming stops for the inner movement of the handles. The inner end of each of thehandles is formed with a toothed segment 14, which engages with the toothed end of the shanks for operating the end cutters when the handles ll 12'are operated. The toothed segments are pivotally connected to the plates 1 2 by means of the pins or studs 15, whichrextend through the upper plate, segments 14, and into the lower part. (See dotted lines, Fig. 2
The lower plate 2 is of greaterlength than the upper plaie 1, or the lower plate 2l is formed with a projecting portion 16, upon which is mounted the apertured guide-lug 17, the function of which will be hereinafter described. The lower plate 2 is further providedV with an opening within whichis arranged the stationary cutter 18 of the bottom cutter. This stationary cutter 18 is formed with a shouldered portion, so that it will engage the inner face of the plate 2, and which also forms an offset through which extends the screw 19 for securing the stationary cutter in position.
The reference-numeral :20-denotes the mov- Aable cutter of the bottom cutter which operates within the opening in the bottom plate. The movable cutter20 is suitably connected to the slide-block 21, which is arranged between the plates 1 and 2. The slide-block 21 has its sides toothed, so that the latter can be engaged by the segments 15 and operate the cutter 20. -Oonnected to the slide-block 21 is a guide-rod 22, which operates through the toothed lug 17. 1
The top plate 1 is formed with an opening 23 to permit of the insertion ota bolt or other device to be cutv or trimmed by the bottom cutters.
The reference-numeral 24 denotes an adjustable screw connected to the guide-rod 22 for adjusting when desired the cutter 20 within the slide-block 21.
The operation of the device is as follows: By opening the handles l1l and 12 the segments 14 will engage with the shauks of the cutters and open the latter, as shown in Fig. 3. segments 14c will also engage the slide-block 21, drawing the same and the movable cutter IOO Simultaneously with this movement the 20 away from the stationary cutter 18. When the handles are brought together, the movement of the shanks 5 6, end cutters, and slide-A block 21 will be reversedthat is to say, the end cutters will be brought together and trim or suitably cut the bolt, and the slide-block and the movable cutter will be forced toward the stationary cutter 18, trimming or cutting the bolt in the desired manner.
It is thought the many advantages of my improved bolt cutter and trimmer can be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will also be noted that minor changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a bolt cutter and trimmer, a pair of plates, end cutters pivotally connected thereto and provided with reinforced ends, a stationary cutter secured to one of the said plates, a movable cutter connected with one of said plates, said stationary and movable cutters forming bottom cutters, and means engaging with said end and bottom cutters for operating the same sim ultaneously.
v2. In a bolt cutter and trimmer, a pair of plates, end cutters pivotally connected to said plates, a toothed slide-block mounted between the said plates, a stationary cutter secured to one of said plates, a movable cutter connectedwith the said slide-block and with one of said plates, and means engaging with the end cutters and with the slide-block for operating the said end and bottom cutters simultaneously.
3. In a bolt cutter and trimmer, a pair of pivoted end cutters having reinforced ends, a bottom cutter consisting of a stationary and a movable cutter, a guide-rod for the said movable cutter, and means engaging with the said end and bottom cutters for operating the same simultaneously.
4. In a bolt cutting and trimming device, an upper plate provided with an opening, a bottom plate provided With an opening and a projecting portion, an apertured lug connected to said bottom plate, a pair of end cutters pivoted to the forward end of said plates, said end cutters provided with reinforced ends, a stationary cutter secured within the opening in the said bottom plate, a movable cutter, a slide-block arranged between said plates and connected with said movable cutter for operating the same, a guide-rod connected with said slide-block and operated through said apertured lug, and means engaging with said end cutters and slide-block for operating said end cutters and movable cutter simultaneously.
5. In a bolt cutting and trimming device, an upper and lower plate, each provid ed with an opening, said lower platefurther provided with a projecting portion, an apertured lug connected with said projecting portion, a pair of end cutters, Shanks formed integral with said end cutters and pivotally connected toV the said plates, said Shanks having their free ends toothed, a stationary cutter secured within the opening of the bottom plate, a movable cutter operating Within the opening of said bottom plate, a toothed slide-block connected with said movable cutter for operating the same, a guide-rod connected with said block and operating through said apertured lug, a pair of toothed segments pivotally secured within said plates and engaging with the toothed Shanks and the said slide-block for operating the end cutters and said movable cutter simultaneously, and handles formed integral with said segments for operating the same.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES CANDLISH.
