RIDING-HARROW.
SPECIFEGATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,851, dated February 25, 1902.
Application tiled March 7, 1901. Serial No. 50,222. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, JOSEPH FRANcoEUR, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Concordia, in the county of Oloud and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Riding-Harrow, of which the followingis a specication.
My invention is an improved riding-harrow; and it consistsin the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a riding-harrow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of the same, taken on a plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 2 and showing the harrowframes raised. Fig. 4 is a similar View ofthe same, showing the harrow-frames lowered.
I will first describe the wheeled frame. "The said wheeled frame 1 comprises the side bars 2, the cross-bar 3, which connects the front ends of said side bars together, the cross-bar 4, which has its ends attached to the side bars 2 and is disposed a suitable distance in rear of the bar 3, obliquely-disposed bars 5, which connect the rear ends of the side bars 2 and form the rear side of the frame, and a pair of longitudinally-disposed bars 6, near the center of the said fram e,which connect thecrossbar 4 to the bars 5. A bar 7 connects the bars 6 together. A bridge-plate 8 extends rearward from said bars 7 to the meeting ends of the bars 5, and on the said plate 8 is secured the longitudinally-adj ustableseat-supporting bar 9. A bracketor block 10 is bolted or otherwise suitably secured to the rear side.y

Hangers 11 have their upper ends secured to the cross-bar 4, said hangers depending from said bar, and draft bars or straps 12 connect the lower portions of said hangers to the crossbar 3. A suitable tongue 13 isattached to the cross-bars 3 4 of the wheeled frame, and
-on the sides of the latter near the front corners thereof are secu red depending standards 14, which carry the front supporting-wheels 15. A fork 16 is pivotally connected to the block or bearing 10, as at 17, and in the said fork is mounted the trail-wheel18, which su pports the rear side of the frame 1.
Rock-shafts 19, which are transversely disposed near the rear side of the frame 1, are journaledin bearings 2O on the bars 2 and 6. To the latter are secured segment-plates 21, whichare engaged by the usual spring-pressed dogs with'which levers 22 are provided, the said levers being secured to the inner ends of said rock-shafts. Each of the latter is provided with rock-arms 23 24,which are disposed at substantially right angles to each other.
Rock-shafts 25, which are disposed in advance of the rock-shafts 19, are journaled in bearings 26 on the side bars 2 and bars 6, and said rock-shafts are provided with rock-arms 27 28, which are disposed substantially at right angles to each other. The rock-arm 23 of each rock-shaft 19 is connected to the rock-arm 27 of one of the rock-shafts 25 bya link 29. Hence bymeans of the hand-levers 22 the said rock-shafts 19 25 may be operated in unison to raise or lower the rock-arms 24 28.
The harrows 30,which are below the Wheeled frame, are connected to the rock-arms 24 28 by lifting- chains 3,1. Hence the said harrows may be readily raised When the machine is to be driven from one point to another, as shown in Fig. 3, and may be lowered to op erative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. The harrows are connected to the hangers 11 by drag-chains 32. Each of the harrows cornprises a pair of longitudinally-disposed beams 33, whielrare connected together by cross bars 34, the latter being adapted to turn in said beams 33 to dispose the harrow-teeth 35, with which said cross-bars are provided, to any desired angle. Each of the cross-bars 34 is provided with a rock-arm 36. The said rock-arms ot' each harrow are connected together by a link 37, and one of the said rock-A arms 36 is prolonged upwardly to form a handlever 38, by means of which the cross-bars 34 may be turned to dispose the harrow-teeth in any desired position. One of these handlevers 38 is provided for each of the harrows 30, and each of the links 37 has a segment-4 rack 39, which is engaged by the usual springpressed dog 40 on its coacting hand-lever 38. When the machine is inv operation, the draft is applied from the front cross-bar 3 of frame 1 to the harrows through the draft bars or straps 12, the hangers 11, which they brace, and the drag-chains 32. Hence the harrows zo wheeled frame including side bars, a front do not drawdownward on the wheeled frame, and the draft on the teain is lightened to the maximum extent.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. In a harrow of the class described, a wheeled frame, including side bars, a front cross-bar 3, across-bar 4 in rear thereof, hangers l1 having their upper ends attached to the cross-bar 4 and draft-bars having their rear ends secured to the lower portions of the hangers and their front ends secured to the front cross-bar 3, in combination with dragharrows, means carried by the wheeled frame, to raise and lower them,and iieXible draft connections between the drag-harrows and the lower portions of the hangers, substantially as described. l

cross-bar 3, a cross-bar 4 in rear thereof, a tongue secured to and connecting said crossbars, hangers 1l having their upper ends attaehed to the cross-bar 4 and draft-bars having their rear ends secured to the lower portions of the hangers and their front ends secured to the front cross-bar 3, in combination with dragharrows, means, carried by the wheeled frame, to raise and lower them, and iiexible draft connections between the dragharrows and the lower portions of the hangers, substantially as described.
