PHILIP M. GUNDLOI-I AND JOHN P. GUNDLAOI-I, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
srEeIEIcATIoN formieg part of Letters Patent No. 693,267, dated February 1 1, 1 902.
v application tiled August 27,'1900. Serial No.l28,l81. (No model.)
To all whom.' t may concert/t:
Be it known that we, PHILIP M. GUNDLAOH and JOHN P. GUNDLACH, of Belleville, inthe county of St. Olairand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Wheel-Hubs; and we do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part'of this (specification.
The present invention .relates to sectional metallic hubs for vehicle-Wheels in which the spokes alternate and are dished in opposite directions. 1
The object of the present improvement is to provide asimplc and efficient sectional hub construction which affordsy means for firmly drawing the inner and adjacent edges of the op positely-arran ged series of spokes together to effect a firm and rigid bracing of the outer ends of Vsuch spokes against the felly or rim of the wheel and which also affords a simple and convenient means forintroducing an extension washer or disk beneath any one of the spokes after the same has become loosened by shrinkage, all as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claims. We'attain such object by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure `l is a detail front elevation of a wheel-hub embodying the present invention with portions of the spokes shown in position;
Fig. 2, a plan view. of the hub; Fig. 3, a detail longitudinal section at line x ac, Figs. l and 2 5 Figs. 4 and 5, detail plan views illustrating modified forms of the fastening means for the hub-sections.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the main outer and inner hub-sections of the present invention, of a substantially the main sections aforesaid will comprise a of which project the radial series of half or vsemi circular sockets 4 5, the'open sides of which face outward, as vshown,"to permit of 'the ready introduction of the spokes in an assemblage of the wheel or in a repair of the cylindrical body portion, from the periphery f sys with notches 7 in the socket-sleeve 3, insure y the proper position of thetwo main sections with relation' to each other and which proper relation of the main sections involves astaggered or alternate relation of the spokesockets 4 and 5, as shown in Fig. 2.V
`The series of half or semicircular sockets 4 and 5 are provided with removable closurepieces 8 9 of a semicircular form, which in ourpreferred construction, as shown in Figs. l and 2, are connected together in pairs by a connecting-Web 10, so as to afforda convenient bearing for the ends of the obliquely-extending clamping-boltsll, by Which'the two main sections l and 2 are rigidly and substantially drawn and held together in the preferred form of our present invention.
In the modified form of the present invention (illustratedin Fig. 4) the removable semicircular closure-piece for the main sockets of the hub-sections are shown 'as individual to each vmain socket, andstr'ap-bolt12 is shown as the vequivalent of the oblique bolt 11 of our preferred construction.
In the modified form shown in Fig.g5 the removable semicircular closuref pieces are shown provided Vwith hook-shaped lugs 13, adapted toengage ribs 14 at the sides of the main sockets to effect an engagement of the parts and dispense with the use Vof the clamping-bolts 1l and l2.
With the present improvement as any particular spoke becomes loosened through shrinkage, &c., the particular cap or closurepiece 8 or 9 confining same can be removed,
and by meansof the usual spoke-jack* the tion, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a wheel-hub, the combination of a pair of hub-sections formed with half-sockets, the
open sides of which face outward, the one se- 1o for securing the cap or closure-pieces in place and for drawing the two main hub-sections together, substantially as set forth.
2. In a wheel-hub, the combination of a pair of hub-sections formed with half-sockets, the
I 5 open sides of whichface outwardly to permit of the insertion of a reinforce-washer beneath the spoke end when required, a removable cap or closure-piece for said sockets, a socketsleeve receiving the adjacent ends of the re- 2o spective hub-sections, and means for drawing the two main hub-sections together, substantially as set forth.
3. In a wheel-hub, the combination ofapair of hub-sections formed with half-sockets, the
open sides of which face outward, the one series of which are staggered with relation to the other, a removable cap or closure-piece for said sockets a socket-sleeve receiving the adjacent ends of the respective hub sections, and
3o means for drawing the two main hub-sections together the same comprising a series of oblique] yarrau ged bolts, substantially as set forth.
4. In a wheel-hub, the combination of a pair of hub-sections formed with open-sided sockets that face outwardly, inwardly-extending bracing-ribs for said sockets, a removable open sided closnrecap for such sockets, a socket-sleeve provided with notches in its opposite edges and adapted to receive the adjacent ends of the respective hub-sections, and
means for drawing the two main hub-sections together, substantially as set forth.
5. In a wheel-hub, the combination of a pair of hub-sections formed with open-sided sockets that face outwardly, inwardly-extending bracing-ribs for said sockets, a removable open-sided closure-cap for such sockets, a socket-sleeve provided with notches in its opposite edges and adapted to receive the adj acent ends of the respective hub-sections, and means for drawing the two main hub-sections together, the same comprising a series of obliquely-arranged bolts, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof witness our hands this 24th day of August, 1900.
PHILIP M. GUN DLACII. JOHN P. 'GUNDLACI'L In presence of- D. F. MILLER, DAN CARDIE.
