.KNOCKDOWN CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 693,197, dated February 11, 1902.
Application filed November 20, 1901. Serial No. 33,057- (No model.) I
To all whom it'may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN WHITE, of Landover, in the county of Prince George and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knockdown Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to knockdown chairs;v
and the object of the same is to construct a chair without the use of screws, nails, or glue, but which is firmly clamped together by tie rods connected by a turnbuckle. The novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described in this specification and claimed and illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part thereof. a
Figure 1 is a perspective of my chair. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same with one side removed and the parts separated. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the difierent views of the drawings.
My chair consists in the main of two parallel side frames 1. Each of the frames 1consists of a rear leg 2, prolonged upward to form the back, and a forward leg 3, also prolonged above the seat. The legs 2 and 3 are cut away at 2 and 3, respectively, and fitted into notches 4*,formed in the outer side of a rocker 4. The outer sides of the legs 2 and 3'have notches 5 formed therein to accommodate a side bar 6, notched at 5 and fitted therein. An arm 7 is connected at one end to the leg 3 by means of a pin 7 and its opposite end is notched at 8 and'fits a notch 9 in the inner side of the leg 2. These frames 1, constructed as above set forth, are tied together in order to give stiffness to the chair by rounds 10, having reduced ends 10, which fit apertures 11, extending transversely the rockers 4 and,
the legs 2 and 3. Cross-bars 12, having reduced ends 12, which fit apertures 13, traversing the legs 2 and 3 and the side bars 6, in combination with the bars 6, form a support for a seat 14. The seat 14 is notched out at the corners at 14, and these notches fit snugly the legs 2 and 3. Back bars 15 and 16, having reducedends, are mounted into the upper ends of the legs 2, which form the back. The tenons 15 for the lower bar 15 traverse the arm 7, as well as the legs 2, and thereby hold the arms securely in place. To tie the .whole structure securely together tie-rods 17,
having heads 17 are passed through apertures in the side bars 6 and have oppositelythreaded ends 17", which are connected by a turnbuckle 18. Since the side bars 6 are the outermost members of the whole chair-frame, thetightening of the turnbuckle 18 will hold the frame together and complete a chair which will not fall to pieces, but which may be knocked down and crated with very little trouble.
I do not'wish to be limited 'as to detailsof construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
[Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. In a chair the combination with a seat of four legs, of cross bars fitting apertures in the inner sides of said legs, side bars fitting notches in the outside of said legs and extending at right angles to said cr0ss=bars, tie-rods passing through apertures insaid side bars and a turnbuckle mounted on'said tie-rods, substantially as described.
2. In a chair the combination with a seat of four legs, of side bars fittedin notches in the outer sides of said legs, cross-bars fitting apertur'es'traversing said legs and said side bars, tie-rods passingthrou'gh apertures in said side bars, and a turnbuckle connecting said tie-rods, substantially as described.
connecting said side bars to lock the chair together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
