SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 693,075, dated February 11, 1902.
Application filed March 6, 1901- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AN REW CLARENCE SMITH, of the city of Los Angeles,in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful or Improved Combined Set-Square and Bevel, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description or specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention, which relates to a certain new and useful improved setsquare and bevel, is especially designed for use by j oiners, carpenters, and other artisans occupied in the construction of roofs for buildings and other branches of the art of construction or working in wood and other materials, wherein portions of timber or other material are cut to any required angle in order to be joined together in a frame or other structure.
This invention consists of a device which is an instrument wherein two blades carried in a stock are contained, which blades are movable upon separate pivots, the said blades being connected movably together by a stiff link, which is so arranged that on motion being imparted to either blade movement of the other blade is also thereby produced, movement of either blade being communicated to the other by means of the stiff movable conmeeting-link. The movements of the two blades bear a constant relationship to each other and are such that while one of the blades is limited in its range of movement to about half a right angle the other blade in its movement has the range of a complete right angle, so that while one of the blades is arranged for the'especial purpose of being used for markin off the angle more commonly employed than others in a vast number of instances of joints in woodworkviz., a half right angleyet the other blade by having its range of movement more extensive is adapted for marking off a considerably larger range of angles when laid upon pieces of timber which. are to be cut for joining together at any required angle. One of the blades is furthermore constructed with a circular segmental slot in it struck from the center of its pivot, and the corresponding part of the other blade is in part cut away to admit of the pas- Serial No. 50,117. sage of a set-bolt or clamping-screw therethrough, through the stock, and also through the segmental slot of that blade which has a range of acomplete rigth angle. The limit of movement of the blades is brought about by the upper end of the segmental slot making contact with the clamping-screw, or by means of one edge of the connecting-link of the two blades coming into contact with the pivot upon which the blade having the range of a complete right angle is carried, or by both of. these acting together, as hereinafter de scribed. By means of the clamping-screw the blades are fastened at any required angle relatively with the straight edgesof the stock, and the edges of either or both blades may be marked with or divided into scales which,
being read in relation to the straight edges of the stock, at once indicate the angle at which either blade is situated.
The instrument or device, as hereinbefore described, is complete in itself for nearly, if
not quite, all purposes for which a set-square 'front elevation of my new or improved setsquare or bevel, showing the movable blades in two positions thereof. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, but with the upper plate of the stock removed in order to show the construction of the pivoted ends of the blades and the link by which they are connected together. Fig. 3 is an edge or side elevation corresponding to Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the upper end of the combined set-square or bevel with the top plate of the stock removed, showing the relationship or positions of the parts when the blades are folded in parallel with the straight edges of the stock. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the inner face of the upper half of the stock, showing the hollow space therein, wherein the upper end of the connecting-link is capable of free movement. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of my combined set-square and bevel, showing an ordinary slotted bevel-blade carried by a clamping-screw in the lower end thereof. Fig. 7 is an edge or side elevation corresponding to Fig. 6.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 the stock of the instrument is marked A A. In this stock AAtwo pivots B B are fixed, as shown at Figs. 1, 2, and 4, and upon these pivots B and B, respectively, the blades 0 and O are carried, the said blades being movable angularly around those pivots. The blade 0 is that blade whose limit or range of movementis at or about that of half a right angle, and the blade 0 is that whose limit or range of movement is a complete right angle, as shown by the full range of motion of the blades C and C by the dotted lines in Fig. l. The upper end of the blade 0 is cut away, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2 in the open position of the blades 0 and O and at Fig. at in the closed position of the blades. The blade 0 has constructed in it the quadrantal slot D, Figs. 2 and 4c, and through this slot D, through holes in each half of the stock A A, and through the open space formed in the upper part of the blade 0 by the portion cut away therefrom the clamping-screwE passes. One
end of the clamping-screw E is fixed in onehalf of the stock A, and the other part of the clamping-screw E, which passes through the blades and the other half of the stock A, has a screw-thread cut on it, upon whicha tightening nut and lever F, Figs. 1 and 3, is carried, and which nut and lever F, being turned around upon the screw, either loosens the blades 0 and O for movement or adjustment in the stock A A, or clamps the blades 0 C and stock A A in any required-positions with each other, according as the clamping-nut and lever F is turned in a left or right hand direction.
The blades 0 and O are connected together by a link G, Figs. 2 and 4, and by the pin connections a and b, respectively, so that when motion is imparted by hand to either of the blades 0 or 0', by reason of their being connected movably together by the link G, mo-
tion is imparted to the other of the blades 0 or C.
That portion of the upper blade O-which is cut away is cut into such shape as to provide the projecting part to which the upper end of the link G is connected by the pin a, While the side or edge of this upper cut-away portion of the blade C which is parallel to the outer edge thereof has a recess 0 formed in it to enable the blade 0 to be moved without being interfered with by the clamping-screw E, as is clearly seen in Figs. 2 and 4.
The limit of range of movement of the blades is eifected by the upper end of the slot D making contact with the clamping-screw E or by means of one of the edges of the link G coming in contact with the pivot B when the blade 0 is raised into the highest position or the position of a complete right angle, (shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1,) and both of these contacts 'may be used to operate jointly and simultaneously.
Upon the inner edge of the blade 0, Figs. 1 and 2, a scale H is shown, which being read in relation to the edge I of the stock at once indicates the angle at which the blade 0 is situated in relation to the stock. It is to be understood that the inner edge of the blade 0 may also be marked with a scale which will indicate its positions in all situations of the blade 0 in relation to the opposite edge of the stock A A.
When the device or instrument is not inand C a little hollow or recess J is formed on each side of stock A A for the purpose of allowing the user of the device or instrument to apply his thumb-nail to the point of either blade 0 or O, and thereby to initiate the angular movement of the blades 0 and 0 upon their pivots B and B.
To provide room for the upper end of the link G moving freely, a curved recess K is formed in the upper end of one-half of the stock A A, as shown in Fig. 4.
At Figs. 6 and 7 the blade M of an ordinary joiners or carpenters bevel is shown applied to the opposite end of the stock A A, wherein it is clamped in the ordinary manner by means of a set-screw'N and clamping-nut P, being provided with a longitudinal slot 0 for enabling the bladeM to be moved longitudinally in relationship to the stock A A.
Having now described the nature of my said invention and the best system, mode, or manner I am at present acquainted with for carrying the same into practical effect, I desire to observe in conclusionthat what I consider to be novel and original, and therefore claim as the invent-ion to be secured to me by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The combined set -square and bevel, wherein two pivoted blades are carried in a stock having straight and parallel sides, one of saidblades having a circular segmental slot therein, the other of said'blades having the upper part, at the side inward from its pivot removed, that is to say, recessed, and a set or clamping screw with; a pinching-nut passing through said stock, through said segmental slot in one of the blades and through the space or recess formed at the upper part of the other blade, the two blades being connected together at their upperends bya link, having movable connections to the upper part of each blade, said link being so shaped that when one of its edges comes into contact with the pivot-pin of that blade wherein the segmental circular slot is formed, and the upper end of the circular segmental slot comes in contact with the clamping-screw, both of said blades are prevented from being moved farther around on their pivots, or are limited in their angular movement upon said pivots,
substantially as hereinbef ore described.
2. The combined set square and bevel, wherein are two pivoted blades carried in a stock, having straight and parallel sides, one of said blades having a circular segmental slot, whose length is such that, when the blade is moved to its upper limit of a right angle relatively with the stock, the upper end of said segmental slot comes in contact with the clamping-screw; the other of said blades having its upper part, at the side inward from its pivot, so recessed that the clamping-screw passes through the stock of the instrument, through the recessed part of thelower blade and through the segmental slot in the other blade,the two blades being connected together at their upper ends bya link having movable connections to the upper part of each blade, all operating together substantially as herein described.
3. The combined 1 set square and bevel, wherein are two pivoted blades carried in a stock having straight and parallel sides, one of said blades having a circular segmental slot therein, the other of said blades having the upper part, at the side inward from its pivot recessed,a clamping-screw with a pinching-nut, said clamping-screw passing through said stock, through the space or recess at the upper part of one blade and through the segmental slot in the upper part of the other blade, the link connecting the upper parts of the blades together, said link being so shaped that when one of the bladeshas been raised to its limit of movement, one of the edges of said link comes in contact with one of the pivots, thereby setting the limit or range of angular movement of the blades, substantially as hereinbefore described.
4. In a set-square and bevel, the combination of a straight parallel-sided stock, two blades, each blade being movable upon a separate pivot, the link connecting the blades together and operating in conjunction with the pivot-pin of one of the blades and the slot whose upper end comes in contact with the clamping-screw, so as to limit the range of angular movement of both of the blades, the clamping screw and nut for tightening the parts of the instrument together at any required angular position, all operating in the manner and for the purposes substantially as hereinbefore described.
5. As constituting a set-square and bevel, the combination of a straight parallel-sided stock, two blades, each blade being movable upon a separate pivot, the circular segmental slot in the upper end of one of the blades, the upper end of which slot comes in contact with the clamping screw, thereby limiting the range of angular movement of both of the blades, the clamping screw and nut for tightupper part of the other blade, the movable link connecting the blades together, said link being so constructed that when one of its sides or edges comes into contact with one of the pivots of the instrument, the limit or range of angular movement of the blades is thereby fixed or determined, all operating together in the manner and for the purposes substantially as hereinbefore described.
7. The combination of the straight,parallelsided stock, the slotted blade at one end of said stock, the clamping screw and nut for securing said slotted blade in, any required angular position in said stock, the two blades at the opposite end of the stock pivoted near to the edges thereof, one of said blades being constructed with a segmental circular slot,
the, other of said blades being cut out or re- 5 cessed at the upper end thereof to admit of the passage of the clamping-screw through the upper part of the said blades and through the said stock, the clamping screw and nut, the link connecting said blades movably, the whole operating in the manner and for the purposes substantially as hereinbefore described.
8. As constituting a set-square and bevel, the combination of a straight parallel-sided stock, the slotted blade at one end of said stock, the clamping screw and nut for securing said slotted blade in any required angular position in said stock, two blades pivoted at the opposite end of said stock, each blade be ing movable upon a separate pivot, the circular segmental slot in the upper end of one of the blades, the upper endof which slot comes in contact with. the clamping-screw, thereby limiting the range of angular movement of both of the blades, the clamping screw and nut for tightening the parts of the instrument together in any required angular positions and the link connecting the upper parts of the blades together, all operating together in the manner andfor the purposes substantially as hereinbefore described.
9.
