UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN CHESTER BUELL, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO E. O. ATKINS & COMPANY, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
HAN DSAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 691,237, dated January 14, I902.
Application filed October 16, 1899. Serial No. 733,767. (No model.)
To allwhom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, WARREN CHESTER BUELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handsaws, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a handsaw which can be conveniently used by the operator with both hands.
A saw embodying said invention will be first fully described and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved handsaw in use, and Fig. 2 a side view of the saw alone on an enlarged scale.
The blade B of this handsaw is, generally speaking, much the same as blades of handsaws of the ordinary form, except that it is curved, so that the cutting edge upon which the teeth are formed is convex. The handle H, however, is of a different form from that ordinarily employed. Instead of a single loop-like haudhold running substantially at right angles with the cutting edge of the saw, there are two handholds, one of which, 1, is preferably a looped haudhold running in the general direction of thelength of the saw,
and the other of which, 2, is an open handhold running transversely of the saw.
The position of the saw in use is almost exactly reversedfrom that of the ordinary handsaw, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawlinear, and therefore to get the full benefit of such a saw the cutting edge should be convex, as shown, instead of straight, as is the case with ordinary handsaws.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hand saw having at one end onlya handle parallel to and extending along the end edge of the blade and a looped handle extending diagonally back from said handle and from the back edge of the saw.
2. A handsaw handled at one end only having a hand-grip running along the end edge I of the blade and adapted to be gripped parallel to such edge, and a loop-handle at an angle to said grip, at the back edge of the blade.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 11th day of October, A. D. 1899.
