UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA w. CARTER, oFooHoEs, NEW YORK.
GARMENT- SUPPORTER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 690,635, dated January 7, 1902 Application filed November 14, 1900. Serial No. 36,480. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EZRA W. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oohoes, in the county of Albany and State of New York, haveinvented certain new andhseful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to means for securing garments to the waist of the wearer, and is adapted to be used in connection with inner or outer garments worn by men or women, but is especially adapted for undergarments worn by men. s
i The object of my invention is to provide means for making the waistband of such garments adjustable in size, so that it may be made to correspond exactly to the waist measurernent of the wearer and support such garments comfortably. These objects I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my device applied to a mans lower undergarment. The ends of the waistband of such garment are shown separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same, showing the ends of the waistband of the garment closed together by means of the supporter.
As illustrated in the drawings, my invention consists of an auxiliary band B, secured at one end to one end A of the waistband of a garment by means of buttons 0, attached to the garment, and buttonholes b formed in the end of said auxiliary band. Said band extends from said end A of the waistband across the inner side of the opposite end A of said waistband and outward through a slit a, formed ins-aid waistband, and then continuously around the outer surface of the remainder of such waistband to said opposite end A of the waistband of the garment, to which the end 6 of the auxiliary band is secured by means of the buckle F or other suitable means. The auxiliary band B is preferably held in placeat the waistband by means of loops a, through which said band passes. By drawing the free end b o'f such auxiliary band through the buckle F any surplus cloth at the waist is taken up by the end A of the Waistband being drawn over so asto lap onto the end A. The waistband, therefore, always fits snugly, but comfortably, to the waist of the wearer and all the looseness or slack at the Waist is taken up atthe front of the garment. I have shown such auxiliary band attached/to the garment at one end by means of buttons 0 engaging buttonholes b in the auxiliary band, whereby such belt may be readily removed when the garment is to be,
laundered. I do not desire to be limited to such construction, however, and such belt may beattached permanently to such garment, if desired. This auxiliary band is used vent looseness or bulgingat the waist-line.
This auxiliary band, moreover, reinforces the waistband of a garment and relieves such waistband from the strains that otherwise would be exerted upon it.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the waistband of a garment provided with an aperture, of an auxiliary band secured to one end of said waistband and extending across the inner side of the opposite end of said waistband, through said aperture, and around the outside of the remainder of said waistband to the said opposite end of said waistband, and adapted to be secured to said opposite end of the waistband, substantially as shown and described. Q 7
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EZRA W. CARTER.
Witnesses:
