Be it known that I, JAMES H. WEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ada, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, have invented a new and. useful Broom-Head, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to broom-heads, and has for its object to present a simple and thoroughly efficient device which may be readily adapted for holding either broomcorn to constitute a broom, or rags, shocks, or other material suited for use as a mop.

The invention consists, generally stated, in a frame provided at one end with an adjustable handle-socket and at the opposite end with a clamp for engaging the substance to be carried by the head, one member of the clamp forming an integral part of the head and the other member of the clamp being detachable to facilitate insertion within the head of the substance to be carried thereby.

Other and salient features of the invention reside in means for effecting the ready clamping of the material within the head, means for preventing loosening or rocking of the detachable clamp member, and means to hold the detachable clamp member against lateral movement with relation to the fixed member.

With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a broom-head, as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated a form of embodiment of my invention capable of carrying my ideas into eect, it being understoodthat the elements herein exhibited may belvaried or changed as to shape, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage without departing from the scope of my invention, and in the drawings-'- Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a broomhead characterized by my invention, the same having associated with it in this instance a bunch of broom-straw, this being indicated by dotted lines. Fig.l 2 is a view in vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a View in perspective of the detachable clamp member. Fig. 4t is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4 4:, Fig. l.

Referring to the drawingsl and particularly to Fig. 1 thereof, I have exhibited a form of embodiment of my invention, the same cornprising two side pieces l, the upper ends of which are curved toward each other and then at right-angles to the curved vportion to present two lips or projections 2, between which works the broom-socket 3, the same in this instance being a hollow T-shaped structure, the head of which is fixed between the lips 2 and is held assembled therewith by a bolt 4, carrying a nut 5, by which the lips may be securely clamped against the head of the socket at any desired anglo to the broom-head, as will be hereinafter more fully pointed out.

The side pieces l, adjacent to the curved insets, are held assembled by plates 6, the outer ends of which are bent at right angles to their length, as at 7, to bear against the outer surface of the side pieces, the offset 7 thus presented being held associated with the side pieces in any preferred manner, as by being soldered or riveted thereto. The two plates 6 when positioned as shown constitute a butt-socket for receiving the butts of the broom-corn when the head is employed as a broom and under all conditions constitute braces for rendering the upper portion of the head firm and rigid. The lower extremities of the side pieces l have rigidly secured to them a plate 8, constituting the fixed member of the clamp for holding the material employed Within the broom head, this fixed member being in this instance held associated with the side pieces l by having its ends bent at right angles toits length to form osets 9, these to be associated with the side pieces in any preferred manner, as by being soldered or riveted thereto.

The detachable clamp member lO, which coperates with the fixed clamp member 8 for holding the broom-corn or other substance in the head, comprises a plate having its ends bent at right angles to its length to present two offsets l1, that bear against the outer sides of the arm l, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and thereby prevent any lateral movement of the member 10 with relation to the said arms. Rigidly secured to 'the clamp member roo l 10 at such distance from the offsets 11 as will permit insertion therebetween of the side pieces 1 are two arms 12, which are to be of such length that when the clamp member 10 is associated with the clamp member 8 they will project within the butt socket, and thereby securely hold the clamping member against any rocking movement resulting from the pressure applied tothe broom-straw or other material underthe operation of the device. Each of the two clamp members 8 and 10, respectively, is provided with two openings 13, through which pass bolts 14, carrying nuts 15, to effect the clamping together of the two members, and while in this instance I have shown but two of. these bolts it will be obvious that a greater number may be used and still be within the scope of myinvention.

lVhen the broom-head is to be used for holding the broom-straw, the two nuts 15 are removed from the bolts 14, and the bolts are then removed. The clamp member 10 is then detached and a bunch of straw of the required bulk is' placed between the side pieces 1 with their butts housed in the buttsocket. The detachable clamp member is then vplaced in position, the bolts are inserted through the opening 18 in the two members, and the nuts 15 are then securely seated in place. To utilize the head for accommodating rags wherea mop is employed or for any other substance suited to constitute a mopor a whitewash-brush, the same procedure is observed as to the manner of securing it in place within thehead, and where the head is to be used for housing a material to be used as a mop the nut 5 is loosened and the broom-socket, and with it the handle, is turned to the angle best suited to the user, after which the nut is again tightened.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that while the device of this invention is exceedingly simple in construction it combines in an effective manner all those elements that are requisite for performing the functions for which the deviceis designed; further, all of the parts are capable of being made by an ordinary mechanic, and this dispenses with the employment of intricate stamping or cutting mechanism for producing the parts. The cost of production will be so slight as to permit of the article being sold at a price that will appeal to every householder.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tol secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

1. A broom-head comprising a frame provided at one end with a handle-socket, at the opposite end with .a clamp and intermediate of its ends with a butt-socket, one member of the clamp being rigidly secured to the head and the other member being detachable therefrom to permit insertion within the head ot' the substance to be carried thereby, and means for effecting rigid assemblage of the clamp members.'

2. A broom-head comprising a frame provided at one end with a handle-socket, at the other end witha two-part clamp and intermediate of its ends with a butt-socketone member of the clampv being provided with arms to lit Within the butt-socket, and means for effecting rigid assemblage of the clamp members.

3. A broom-head comprising a frame composed of two parts, an adjustable handlesocket carried by one end ot' the frame, a butt-socket located adjacent to the handlesocket and holding the two members of the frame assembled, a clamp member carried by the other end ot the framemember, a detachable clamp member having arms to project within the butt-socket, and bolts passing through the two-clamp members for holding the same rigidly assembled.
