SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,923, dated December 31 1901. Application filed April 13, 1901. Serial No. 55,781. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK A. SnuoNns and CHAUNOEY H. FISHER, citizens of the United States, and HUGH 0. Ross, a subject of the King of Great Britain, all residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air and Spring Guns; and we do hereby declare the following to to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Ourinvention relates to improvements in air and spring guns; and its object is to provide the same with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims. Heretofore such guns have been provided with a rotating 2o plunger to distribute the wear of the sear engagement with the same. This is objectionable in that the barrel is not always perfectly formed and the plunger fails to rotate, or if it should rotate it is likely to leak. We remedy this by providing the plunger With a flange freely rotative on the plunger, with which flange the sear engages. Such guns have also been provided with a pull-rod connecting the plunger and lever, which rod is liable to be bent and is not readily detachable from the plunger. We provide an improved means of connecting the plunger and lever, consisting, essentially, of two links slidably connected to each other, one link being detachably connected to the plunger and the other link having an eye at the end engaging the hook on the lever. WVe also provide an improved spring-stop, consisting of a cup having a central opening and detachably secured in the breech of the barrel by a screw, as will more fully appear by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a horizontal section of a device embodying our invent-ion; Fig. 2, a detail of the plunger and parts attached; Fig. 3, a detail of the spring-stop; Fig. 4., a detail of the rotative flange on the plunger, and Fig. 5 a detail of the link detachably connected to the plunger.

A represents the barrel, within which is the reciprocating plunger B, having at its forward end a suitable packing O to fit Within the barrel as nearly air-tight as possible.
D is a flange freely rotative on the plunger and located near the rear end of the same and engaged by the sear M when the plunger is drawn back. The spring F engages the plunger at its forward end and at the rear end is engaged and held by a cup-shaped stop G, having a central opening for the passage of the rear link and detachahly secured in place by a screw H.
E is a flat lug on the rear end of the plunger, having two transverse openings, to which lug the link I is deta'chably connected, said link for that purpose having an open forward end provided with oppositely-turned hooks J J to engage the openings in the lug. Eno gaging the link I and longitudinally slidable therein is a closed link, having a partition K near its rear end, forming a separate eye, with which eye the hook L of the operatinglever L is engaged.
M is the sear to engage the plunger and hold the same.
N is the engaging spring for the sear, and O the trigger for releasing the sear.
From the foregoing the operation of our device will be readily understood. When the plunger is drawn back, the links will turn where they engage each other, and thus avoid bending and friction. When the lever is returned to place, the rear link is carried forward within the forward link by the engage ment of the hook with the partition K. When the plunger is released and moved forward by the spring, the forward link traverses freely within the rear link. The flange D 0 turns freely on the plunger, and thus presents successive portions of its surface to the parts in all of the 50 sear, thus distributing the wear. At the same time the links prevent the plunger from turning, and the packing thus becomes better fitted to the surface traversed by it and remains tight much longer.
The device is readily taken apart and assembled for repairs or other purposes. By removing the screw H the spring, plunger, and links can then be drawn out at the breech of the barrel. The link I is readily detached by turning it to the position at right angles to the plunger and releasing one of the hooks J and then reversing its position and releasing the other hook J. The links can then be readily detached from each other. The reverse operations will of course assemble the device. 7
Having thus fully described our invention, What We claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an air and spring gun, in combination with the plunger and sear, a flange rotative on the plunger and engaged by the sear, substantially as described.
2. In an air and spring gun, in combination with the plunger and operating-lever, two links slidably connected to each other at their adjacent ends, and pivotally connected to the plunger and lever at their respective outer ends, substantially as described.
3. In an air and spring gun, the combination of a plunger, an operating-lever having a hook and two links slidably connected to each other at their adjacent ends, one of said links having an eye at the end pivotally engaging the hook on the lever, and the other link pivotally attached to the plunger, substantially as described.
4:. The combination of a plunger, having a lug at the rear end, a link detachably secured to the lug, a link slidably connected to said link, and having a partition near the end forming an eye, and a lever having a hook engaging the eye, substantially as described.
5. The combination of a plunger, a lug on the plunger, having two transverse openings, a link having an open end provided with hooks to engage the openings, a link slidably engaging said link and having a partition forming an eye in the end and a lever having a hook engaging the eye, substantially as described.
6. The combination of a barrel, a plunger and spring in the barrel, a stop in the breech of the barrel engaging the spring, a screw to secure the stop, a lug on the plunger having two transverse openings a link having an open end, provided with hooks engaging the openings in the lug, a link slidably engaging said link, and having an eye at one end, and a lever having a hook detachably engaging the eye, substantially as described.
