SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 684,799, dated October 22, 1901.
Application filed September 1 1900 Serial No. 28,826. (No modelf) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN GREEN DE- vOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county of Allen and State fof Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jar-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in jar or can covers, and more particularly to that class of covers designed to seal the can or jar in a herlnetical manner. Y The objects of the invention are, first, to provide an improved cover so constructed as to hermetically seal the can and protect the contents from the deleterious effects of the air; second,to provideim proved means whereby the cover may be securely locked in position until it is desired that it should be removed, and, third, to provide an improved cover which will be simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and durable and effective in use.
I attain the above-enumerated objects by the construction, arrangement, and aggroupment of parts to be more fully described in the following specification, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out 'in the claims.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a jar provided with my improved cover. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the jar with the cover removed therefrom. Fig. 4 is a view of the bottom of my improved cover. Fig. 5 is a side view in elevation of the cover; and Fig. 6 is a side view in elevation of the cover, showing the cam-faced flanges.
p Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a jar of any suitable form, to which my invention is applied. The interior of the mouth of this jar 1 is provided with an annular shoulder 2, having its inner circumference formed with segmental recesses 3. This shoulder 2 is formed so as to be provided with an annular 'recess or groove 4 and innerV raised portions or beads 5. The groove 4 is adapted to receive and retain any suitable packing, as at 6. I prefer to make this packing of a composition of cotton or like material and paraftin or beeswax, which at once forms a substance that is yielding to pressure and well adapted to the use intended. In the groove 4 andupon the surface .of the packing 6 I place a packing-ring 7, of yielding material, preferably of rubber, which adds materially in hermetically sealing the closure and protects the packing 6 from such liquids or other substance as may pass through the mouth or open end of the jar.
v The cover consists of a cylindrical portion 8, the upper surface of which is provided with an annular flange 9. The upper surface of the cover is provided with an elongated socket 10, adapted to receive a suitable instrument or tool for turning the cover to either lock or unlock the same. -The under face of the annular flange 9 is grooved, so as to form an annular recess 11 and an annular depending bead l2. This bead 12 is adapted to fit down closely upon the surface of the rubber packing-ring 7. In the recess 1l is placed a suitable packing 13, adapted to restupon the upper surface of the raised portions or beads 5 of the shoulder 2. It will be seen from the above description, taken in connection with the drawings, that a double means is afforded for hermetically sealing vthe jar-cover.
The lower portion of the cylindrical cover 8 is provided with laterally-projectin g flanges 14, of the saine length as that of the segmental recesses 3 and adapted to register therewith. These lateral projections or flanges 4 have their upper surfaces curved or camshaped, as at 15, so as to better grip the under surface of the shoulder 2.
When it is desired to seal the jar, the cover is placed in the mouth of the jar with the lateral projections 14 opposite the segmental recesses 3 in the annular shoulder 2. The cover is then pushed downward and a suitable instrument placed in the elongated recess 10, whereby the cap is given a quarterturn in either direction, so as to bring the laterall y-proj ectin g fian ges 14 under the shoulder 2 to lock the cover securely in position. By thus turning the cover the cam-surfaces 15 will cause the bead of the annular flange 9 to press upon the packing 7 in the annular groove 4 and the inner beaded portions 5 of the shoulder 2 to impinge against the packing in the groove of the cap or cover. will thus be perceived that by the above-described construction I provide a cover simple in construction which will securely and hermetically seal the jar.
What I claim is- 1. The combination with a jar, provided with an internal laterally-projecting flange having segmental recesses formed therein and a groove in the upper face thereof, of a cover provided with an upper annular flange, the under face of' which is formed with a groove adapted to receive any suitable packing; and lower segmental, laterally-'projecting flanges at the base of' said cover, adapted to enterl the segmental recesses in the shoulder of the jar, and to be turned thereunder to lock the cover in position.
2. The combination with a jar, provided with an internal, laterally-projecting flange having segmental recesses formed therein, and a groove in the upper face thereof adapted to receive any suitable packing, of a cover provided with an upper annular flange, the under face of which is provided with an annular depending bead, adapted to t closely upon the surface of the packing inthe groove of the flange in the shoulder of said jar; and lower segmental, laterally-projecting flanges at the base of said cover, adapted to enter the segmental recesses in the internal shoulder of the jar, and to be turned thereunder to lock the cover in position.
3. The combination with a jar, provided with an internal, laterally-projecting flange having segmental recesses formed therein, a groove inthe upper face thereof adapted to receive any suitable packing, and an inner annular bead; of a cover formed with an upper annular flange, the under face of which is provided with an annular groove adapted to receive a packing material, arranged so as to rest upon the bead on the flange of the jar; an outerperipheral depending bead upon the under face of the upper flange of the cover, adapted to fit closely upon the packing in the groove in the flange of the jar, seg* mental, laterallyprojecting flanges at the base of the cover, formed to enter the recesses in the flange of the jar, and to be turned thereunder to lock the cover in position.

The combination with a jar, provided with an internal laterally-projecting flange having segmental recesses therein, a groove in the upper face thereof, adapted to receive a packing of any suitable material, a rubber packing-ring in the `groove and on the surface of the packing material and adapted to protect the same from moisture, the., and an inner annular bead, of a cover formed with an upper annular flange, the under face of which is provided with an` annular groove adapted to receive a packing material, arranged so as to rest upon the bead on the flange of the jar; an outer peripheral depending bead upon the under face of the upper flange of the cover, adapted to fit closely upon the packing on the flange of the jar, segmental, laterally-projecting flanges at the base of the cover, provided with cam-surfaces adapted to enter the segmental recesses in the flange of the jar, and an elongated socket in the upper face of the cover adapted to rcceive a suitable tool for turning the cover into a locked position.
