UNITED STATES PATENT ()EF CE.
JAMES P. MATHEWS, OF NORTHEAST, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEAD-REST FOR CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 684,283, dated october 8, 1901. Application filed January 10, 1901. Serial No. 42,731. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES P. MATHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Northeast, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests for Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled. in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to head rests for chairs 5 and its object is to provide a head-rest consisting of two rollers so coupled together as to move in unison with each other, and, further, to provide means for adjusting the headrest at any angle desired without disturbin g the occupant of the chair. To accomplish this result, I construct my improved head-rest as hereinafter set forth and described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view in. elevation of my improved head rest on a chair-back. Fig. 2 is a rear view in elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of a portion of the same, partially in section. Fig. t is a like detail of the head-rest-supporting bar.
In the drawings thus illustrating my invention, A is a portion of the back of a barbers chair, B the head-rest-bar socket, and b the dog for engaging the ratchet-teeth on the bar, all of which are of the usual construction.
The head rest bar D is provided with ratchet-teeth d in the usual manner and has its upper end provided with forks d, between which a segment E of a worm-wheel is pivoted by means of a pivot e, and in a recess 01 in the bar D, I mount a worm F, adapted to engage the worm-wheel segment E. The worm F is provided with a milled knob F, by means of which the worm F can be rotated. To the segment E, I secure a yoke H, in which I mount rollers I I, and to the rollers I I are secured crank-arms J J, connected together by a bar K, which is also provided with a handle it, whereby it can be moved to the right or left, so as to rotate the rollers I I to the right or left in unison, so that a mans head resting upon said rollers can be turned from side to side by the movement of the bar K, as desired, while the angle of the yoke H and the rollers II, mounted therein, can be adjusted at will by means of the worm F. I
Having thus described my invention so as to enable others to construct and operate the same, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is 1. A head-rest, comprising substantially a yoke or frame, rollers j ournaled therein, crank-arms on the journals of said rollers, and abar connecting said crank-arms so that the rollers can be revolved in either direction in unison, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a head-rest of a yoke or frame, means for adjusting said yoke or frame, rollers journaled in said frame, crankarms on the journals of said rollers, and a bar connecting said crank-arms, substantially as I and for the purpose set forth..
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. MATHEWS. Witnesses:
