To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. FRAsIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Feeding Apparatus for Boiler-Tube-Cleaning Compositions; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
The drawing shows my device in central vertical section.
The invention relates to means for injecting chemical compounds into steam-boilers and the tubes thereof in order to keep such free from scale and incrustation 5 and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating this invention,the letter or represents the vessel in which the boiler-cleaning compound, in solution or liquid form, is placed, being fed into such vessel as often as may be required through the funnel b, the neck or passage g of which is provided with a valve (1. This vessel or should be a closed cylinder of sufficient strength to withstand the pressure of steam employed for the injection of the compound into the boiler. At the side of this closed vessel is provided a glass gage-tube f, which communicates with the interior of the vessel and serves to indicate the height of liquid therein as well as the rate at which it is being fed to the boiler. From the lower end of the vessel extends an independent outlet-pipe .72, which is provided with a valve e, serving to regulate or cut off the flow through said pipe h, which is connected to the feed-water pump, injector, or other appliance or pipe for feeding water to the boiler.

This steam-pipe extends to the nearest steam-pipe or any steam vessel in convenient location from which the necessary steam can be obtained for pressure. The valves 0 and e are designed to graduate the inflow of steam and the flow of the liquid compound into'the'water-feed pipe, and the appliance is usually placed in juxtaposition to the feed-water pipe on the side farthest from the feed-pump or other device for supplying water to the boiler.
The operation is as follows: Valves 0 and e being closed, shutting 0% the steam-pressure and closing the outlet to the feed-water, the valve d is opened and the liquid compound is poured into the vessel a through the funnel and its neck until the glass gage f on the side of the vessel or reservoir (1 indicates that the proper quantity has been supplied. Then the valve (1 is closed and the valve e in the outlet-pipe to the feed-water appliance is opened. At the same time the valve 0 of the steam-pipe 7c is opened in order that the steam may enter the top of the vessel a and exertpressure on the surface of the liquid compound. The valves 0 and e are capable of being opened more or less or in a graduated manner in order that the rate of flow through them may be controlled. When these valves are opened to but little extent, the steam-pressure will be small and the flow of the liquid will be scant. This flow may be increased by opening the steam-pressure valve to greater extent, and still further by increasing the opening in the pipe h leading to the feed-water. By means of these two valves the rate of injection of the cleaning compound can be regulated with great accuracy, so that the proper amount required to keep the boiler and its appliances free from scale can be automaticallysupplied in a continuous manner. After such regulation has been established and the valves properly adjusted with reference thereto the device will work continuously without further handling in a most satisfactory manner.
The device is without danger and is reliable. When once set, the entire contents of the vessel a will be injected into the boiler and its feed-water appliances, not in a spasmodic manner, but continuously and gradually, in accordance with the adjustment. The steam from the pipe h, while it serves principally to exert the proper pressure on the liquid compound in the vessel a to eifect the required injection into the feed-water pipes or passages or boiler, has also an important function in supplying heat, whereby coagulation of the liquid compound is prevented.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An adjustable automatic steam-feeding device for injecting boiler-cleaning compounds into a steam-boiler, consisting of the combination with the reservoir for the cleaning compound, and its independent valved supply-pipe, of the independent steam-pressure pipe directly connected to the top of the reservoir, the adjustable regulating-valve thereof, the feed-Water pipe, the independent outlet-pipe for the cleaning compound connecting the bottom of the reservoir to said feedwater pipe, the adjustable regulating-valve of said outlet-pipe, and the glass regulatinggage alongside the reservoir, and communicating therewith at top and bottom, whereby the valves of the steam-pressure pipe and of the outlet-pipe may be adjusted to efieot a constant and even flow of the cleaning compound through said out-let-pipe at any desired rate of speed determined by inspection of said gage, substantially as specified.
