MORTIMER CAHILL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HYDROCARBON STOVE-HEATER.
SPEGIFIGATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,723, dated October 1, 1901.
Application filed September 1'7, 1900. Serial No: 30,291. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER CAHILL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon Stove-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in hydrocarbon stove-heaters, the object being to produce a simple, cheap, and effective heater which may be readily attached in an ordinary stove.
To such end the invention consists in certain novel features of-construction, a description of which will be found in the following specification and the essential features more particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings furnished herewith by means of three figures, Figure 1 being a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section of the same, the plane of the section being indicated at 2 2 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a side View of a hollow plug used in the generating-chamber.
In the views, Arepresentsacap, into which is fitted a hollow plug 13, formed in its outer face with a zigzag groove 1), beginning at b, continuing almost around the surface of the plug, and terminating at b in an opening leading into the interior thereof. The plug is closed at the end 11 A supply-pipe 0 leads from a reservoir or other source of supply, preferably located above the heater, so as to allow the gasolene, kerosene, or other hydrocarbon oil to flow into the heater, its end being threaded in the cap A and communicating with the end I) of the groove 1). Into the top of the cap Ais threaded a nipple d, from which leads a U-shaped pipe D to a T-coupling d, connecting the latter with a second pipe D, which is plugged at its end. A pipe E leads from the T-coupling cl at right anples from the pipes D D and connects them to two pipes F F by means of a second T- coupling f, the free ends of the pipes F F being also plugged, as shown in the drawings. Apertures f f are formed in the pipes F F and are adapted to direct the flame of gas upon the pipes D D, the heat being communicated to the vaporizing-chamber and causing the oil to become vaporized in the same.
In the operation of the heater the oil is permit-ted to flow slowly through the zigzag groove into the vaporizing-chamber, the cap and plug having previously been heated sufficiently to cause the oil when it strikes the end 11 of the plug to vaporize and flow through the tubes D, D, E, F, and F and out through the apertures f f. The gas when lighted produces intense heat, heating the stove, and the flame being directed upon the pipes D D keeps them hot. A portion of the heat is transmitted to the cap and plug and vaporizes the oil as fast as it reaches the Vaporizing-chamber.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. Ahydrocarbon-burnercomprisingavap- 7o orizing-chamber and communicating with a suitable source of supply, a zigzag passage surrounding said chamber for conveying the hydrocarbon oil to the chamber, a pipe lead ing from said chamber, a second pipe con-' nected to said pipe between its ends and a pipe connected between its ends to the secondnamed pipe and formed with apertures adapted to direct the flame of gas against the first-named pipe; substantially as described.
2. Ahydrocarbon-burnercomprisingasupply pipe, at vaporizer connected therewith made up of a cap and a hollow plug having a recess between them connected at one part with the supply-pipe and at another with the 8 5 interior of the plug, and a pipe leading from the interior of the plug provided with orifices directed toward the vaporizer; substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Kirkland, in the county of Dekalb and State of Illinois, this 1st day of September, A. D. 1900.
MORTIMER GAHILL.
