. new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks for Steam-Boilers, the. of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an adjustable outlet whereby either the liquid or the gaseous contents of a steam-boiler or other receptacle intended to contain a liqnid, such as water, and gaseous fluid, such as, steam, may be allowed to escape wholly or in part from the receptacle.
The invention is intended, primarily, for water-levelindicator for a steam-boiler; but it may be used for otherpurposes, as hereinafter specified.
The invention consists in the combination, with a boiler or other receptacle, of a movable outlet fitted to communicatewith the interior of the receptacle and adjustable so that its inner or receiving end may be immersed in the liquid in the receptacle or raised above the liquid to communicate with the space above it, the outlet permitting the escape of the liquid when in one position and the gas tube f is vertically movable.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of an apparatus embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent similar views showing different embodiments of my invention.
Referring first to Fig. 1, a represents a receptacle, such as a steam-boiler, and b represents an external receptacle connected at the upper and lower portions with the receptacle a by the connections 0 d, the arrangement being such that liquid will stand at the same level in each receptacle. j represents a valve, which is adjustable in the casing g bymeans of a screw-threaded connection between its stem j andthe upper portion of the casing. The tube f and easing g, with its valve 3', may be raised or lowered in the stuffing-box 6, so that the lower end of the tubef may be immersed in the liquid in the receptacle 1) or may be raised above the liquid. In the former case the opening in the valve j will permit a discharge of liquid through the outlet 77,, while in the latter case the opening of the valve will permit the discharge of steam through said outlet.-

I The above-described device may be used as a water-level indicator or gage-cock for a boiler. When it is desired to ascertain the height of the water-level in the receptacles a and b, the operator opens the valve j. If the lower end of the tube fis above the waterlevel, steam will escape through the outlet 71 The operator by depressing the tubefuntil the flow of steam ceases and the flow of water commences will be able by consulting the graduated guide L" to ascertain the exact height of the water-level, said guide being marked to indicate, in cooperation with the sleeve Z, the exact height of the lower end of the tnbefabove the bottom of the receptacle 1).
In. Fig.2 is shown a dilferent construction, in which a tube m is journaled to rotate in the stuffing-box n in one side of a boiler or other receptacle a, the said tube having a vertical extension m within the boiler, the lower end of this extension opening into either the steam or water space of the boiler, according to the adjustment of the device. The casing 01 is affixed to the outer end of the tube or and has an outlet 0, a valve-seat p,and a valve q, the latter having a threaded stem q engaging the internally-threaded upper portion of the casing 01. In this case the operator turns the tube m to vary the height of the receiving end of the extension 1% by swinging the latter in a vertical plane, the result being the same as that described in connection with the construction shown in Fig. 1. The casing n is provided with an indicatorarm .9, which cooperates with a graduated segmental scale-plate t, affixed to the boiler a.
In Fig. 3 Ishow the boiler provided with two stand-pipe sections to and it, having stuffing-boxes o o and a tube w fittedto slide in said stuffing-boxes and provided with a seat, and a valve The liquid stands at the same level in the tube w as in the boiler a, and the operator by moving the tube up or down and opening the valve m causes either steam or water to emerge from the outlet oc, according to the height of the waterline. A pointer y on the tube w cooperates with the vertical guide z, affixed to the boiler a.
The above-described apparatus may be used in connection with other receptacles besides steam-boilers. For example, it may be used in connection with holders for carbonated or aerated beverages under pressure to enable either liquid or gas to be withdrawnfrom the receptacle, the liquid being withdrawn when the adjustable tube is below the liquid-level and gas when the tube is above said level.
In each of the figures of the drawings the construction is such that the valve may be operatedand the position of the inlet varied independently or together by one hand of the operator. With the construction shown in Fig. 1 the operator may slide the tube f up or down by means of the handle on the valvestem without turning the valve to open it, or the valve may be opened or closed while the tube is being slid up or down. WVith the form shown in Fig. 2 the operator may grasp the handle of the Valve-stem and either while opening or closing the valve or holding it seated may press laterally on the handle of the valve-stem, so as to swing the casing 12 and turn the tube'm and its extension m. When the form shown in Fig. 3 is employed, the vertical adjustment of the tube 10 may be effected by pressing up or down upon the handle on the valve-stem either while the valve remains closed or while simultaneously turning the handle to open or close the valve.
I claim 1. An apparatus of the character specified, comprising a reservoir and a movable conduit having an inlet communicating with the interior of the reservoir, and an outlet outside of the reservoir, said inlet being adjustable toward and from the bottom of the reservoir and adapted to receive the liquid or gaseous contents of the reservoir, a valve for controlling the said outlet and means whereby the valve may be operated and the position of theinlet varied, independently or together, by one hand.
2. An apparatus of the character described, comprising a reservoir and a movable conduit having an inlet communicating with the interior of the reservoir, an outlet outside the reservoir, said inlet being adjustable toward and from the bottom of the reservoir and adapted to receive either the liquid or the gaseous contents of the reservoir, an indicator whereby the observer may determine the height of the liquid-level, a valve for con trolling the said outlet and means whereby the valve may be operated and the position of the inlet varied, independently or together, by one hand.
