Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.,
RICHARD TITUS AND DOR C. COVERT, OF BOWLNG GREEN, OHIO, ASSIGNORS OF THREE-FOURTHS TOSTEPHEN FLOYD AlKEN AND ALEXANDER C. MCD ONALD.
STUFFlNG-BOX.
SEEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,922, dated August 6, 1901.
Application filed March 5, 1901l T0 all whom it may concern:f l
Be it known that we, RICHARD TITUS and DOR C. GOVERT, citizens of the United States, residing at Bowling Green, in the county of Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Stuffing-Box, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention'is an improved stuffing-box for the polish-rod of an oil-well; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter fully set forth and claimed. y
The object of our invention is to provide an improved stuffing-box which is adapted to permit the lateral play of the polish-rod incident to the operation of the walking-beam or pumpin g-j ack, which operates the polish-rod', and to effectually pack the latter, a further object of our invention being to provide means to maintain the requisite pressure o n the packing-rings in the stuffing-box and to regulate the pressure thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a stuffing-box embodying our improvements, showing the same in operative relation to a polish-rod. Fig.-2 is a detail view of one of the adj listing-nuts.
The stuffing-box l is cylindrical in formyl has the bore 2 in its upper portion, and is provided on its lower side with an exteriorlythreaded portion 3 of reduced diameter, whichV is adapted to be screwed into the upper end of an oil-Well tubing. The bore 4 of the said threaded extension '3 is of greater diameter than the polish-rod a, which operates therein, excepting at its upper portion, where the said bore is contracted, as at 5, and engages the polish-rod. The said contracted portion of the bore serves to scrape the parafin from the polish-rod and also serves to center the latter in the stuffing-box and at the same time permits the polish-rod to play laterally in the stuffing-box, this lateral motion, as is well known, being imparted to the polish-rod by the walking-beam or pumping-jack.
In the bottom of the bore 2 is disposed a bushing 6, which is preferably made of brass and has its upper-side concaved, as shown. The packing 7, which is preferably hemp or Serial No. 49,873. (No model.)
per portion of the follower isenlargled, as at 9, and thelowerportion thereof is contracted,
as at 10, hence serving to centert'he polishrod, while admitting of the lateral play thereof. v,The under side of the gland is concaved,
las shown, the opposing coucaved faces of the gland and bushing serving to compress the outersides of the packing-rings, and hence expand the latter on their inner sides, which contact with the polish-rod.
The stuflng-box is provided at its upper end on opposite sides with lugs 11, in which are vertical guide-openings 12. The gland 8 is provided at its upper end en opposite sides with lugs 13. Adjusting-bolts 14 are secured in the lugs 13 and depend therefrom,
the angular heads 15 of said bolts being coun- 'tersunk in similar-shaped recesses on the upper sides of the lugs. Said bolts pass through the guide-openings 12 in the lugs of the studingebox, and on the lower portions of the said bolts are coiled compression-springs 17, the
tension of which may be varied at will by nuts 18, which are adapted to be turned by hand. It will be understood that the springs and bolts cooperate to press the glanddowncouple said stuffing-box to an oil-well tubing,
the bore of said extension being of greater diameter than the polish-rod and being coni tracted at its upper end to engage the polishrod, said stuffing-box having guide-lugs projecting therefrom, a removable bushing in said stung-box, a follower movable in said stuling-boX, having a bore of greater diamesaid bolts, engaging the lower ends of said springs and adapted to Vary the tension thereof,`for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.`
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD TITUS. DOR C. COVERT.
