SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 679,804, dated August 6, 1901.

Beit known that I, CHARLES J. VOHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New London, in the counties of Waupaca and Outagamie and State-of Wiseonsin,haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to mali-'e and use the same.

The invention relates to washboards.:

The object of the invention is to provide a washboard of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production.

With this and other objects in viewrthe invention consists of certain novel features of construction,- combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described,- and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front view of my improved washboard. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the washboard with one side piece removed and the ends of several of the Wires broken off in order to show the grooves in the edge of the board. Fig.- 3 is a view taken from the inner side of the side piece.

Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes the rubbingsurface of the board; 2, the side pieces or Stiles; 3, the soap-shelf; 4, the upper cross-piece, and 5 the back of said shelf.-

The board 1 is provided with a series of parallel shallow grooves 6, extending horizontally across its face and communicating with grooves 7, formed in the edges of the board. In these grooves are placed wires 8, which project sufficiently beyond the surface of the board to form rubbing-ribs, and which have their ends bent at right angles to their body portions and fitted into the grooves formed in the edges of the board. or side pieces 2 each are provided with vertical grooves or recesses 9 to receive the edges of the board and with transverse slots l0 to receive the ends of the shelf 3 and are secured in place by nails or other fastening means,- thus securely locking the wires in their positions, as the wall a, of each groove in the stile embraces the horizontal or body portion of the wires, thus preventing their withdrawal from their grooves.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and advantages of my in# vention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

g Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A washboard comprising a rubbing-board formed with horizontal parallel grooves in its face and grooves in its edges communicating with the parallel horizontal grooves and provided at its upper end with a shelf, wires seated in said horizontal grooves and having their ends bent to engage the grooves in the edges of the board, side pieces or stiles having vertical grooves intersected at their upper ends by transverse slots 10 said side pieces or stiles engaging with the edges of said board and with the ends of the shelf and embracing said wires and secured in place, substantially as set forth.
