(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VV ILL J. KENNEDY, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 679,461, dated July 30, 1901.
Application filed May 6, 1901- Serial NO- 58,922. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILL J. KENNEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill-Oouplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to thill-couplings.
The object of the invention is to provide a thill-coupling which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, and comparatively inexpensive of production and by means of which the shafts may be easily and quickly attached to or removed from the axle and which when in operative position will be prevented from becoming accidentally disengaged.
With this and other objects in View the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved thill-coupling, showing it in position for use. Fig. 2 isalongitudinalverticalsectionalview. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the thilliron rcmoved, and Fig. at is a similar view of the coupling head.
The thill-coupling is composed of two parts, part 1 being the coupling-head and part 2 be ing the thill-iron. The coupling-head is provided with checks 3, having circular edges i and a segmental wall 5, formed with a T- shaped slot 6, the narrow portion of the slot being at the rear, while the broad portion of the slot is at the base of the segmental wall. The thill-iron is provided with a curved head 7, designed to fit between the cheek-pieces 3 and snugly fit the curved wall 5 and is formed with a rearwardly-extending T-head 8, adapted to engage the T-slot 6 of the coupling-head and when in the position shown in Fig. 1 look the thill-iron to the coupling-head. Forward of the head is formed an enlargement 9, terminating on its lower side near its rear end in a lip 10, spaced from the head '7 and adapted to engage under the forward lower end of the segmental wall, while the laterally-extending edges are adapted to engage the circular edge 4. of the lip. This shoulder has also an upper lip 11, which is adapted to engage the upper rear end of the segmental wall when the thilliron is raised to a vertical or nearly vertical position. The ends of the head 7 are formed with recesses 12, which are intersected by horizontal slots 13. In assembling the parts these slots 13 receive short studs or lugs 14, projecting inwardly from the cheek-pieces 3.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a shill-coupling, the combination with a coupling-head provided with cheek-pieces and an interposed segmental wall formed with a T-slot, of a thill-iron provided with a circular head to fit between said cheek-pieces and provided with a T-head to engage said T-slot and with an enlargement formed with an underlyinglip spaced from the circular head and designed to engage the lower side of the segmental wall, substantially as set forth.
2. In a'thill-coupling, the combination with a coupling-head provided with cheek-pieces and a segmental wall formed with a T-slot, of a thill-iron provided with a circular head to fit between said cheek-pieces and segmental Wall and formed with a forwardly-projecting T-head to engage the T-slot,said cheek-pieces being provided on their inner faces with studs and said curved head being provided at its ends with recesses intersected by horizontally-disposed slots, substantially as set forth.
3. In a thill-couplin g, the combination with a coupling-head provided with cheek-pieces and an interposed segmental wall formed with a T-slot, of a thill-iron provided with a circular head to fit between said cheek-pieces and provided with a T-head to engage said In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- :0
nesses. A
