Application ille-a April 28,1900. sean no. 14,752. (No miel.)I
To all, w/tmn/ it may concern.:
Be it known that. I, MABERY CHAs. RODEN- BERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Tool-Holder, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to tool-holders, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character wllieh is especially designed for holding a cold-chisel or like inlplement used by stone-cutters for trimming ofi the surplus lead calking used in the joints of granite monuments. When such implements are held in the hand, a portion of the latter intervenes between the stone and the implement, whereby the latter is inclined into the joint and makes an unfinished cut. In view of this diiiiculty the essential object of the present invention is to provide a holder which will support the tool substantially parallel with` the stone, so that the calking may be cut straight and smooth or flush with the outer side of the stone.
A further object is to provide improved means for adjusting the clamping-jaws f the device so as to firmly grip different sizes of tools and to locate such means between the handles of the holder, so as to be housed and protected againstaceidental movement which might loosenthe grip of the de'ce.
Vith these and other objects in View thek present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinatten more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly point- -ed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the ela-im wjthout departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.v
In the drawings, 'Figure l is a perspective view of a tool-'holder constructed in accordance with the present invention and applied to a chisel. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device.
Corresponding parts in both figures o the drawings are designated by like characters of reference.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l and 2 designate, respectively, tlie'opposite handles of the holder, which are provided at.
adjacent ends with the respective jaws 3 and 4, which are designed to grip the -tool 5, as best shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. At or adjacent to the inner ends of the jaws the handles are provided with the respective inwardly-directed bearing-ears 6 and 7, which are hingedly connected by means of a pivotpin El', whereby an opening or separation of the handles produces a closing or clamping of the ja'ws upon the tool.
To conveniently adjust the jaws, so as to more firmly grip the tool, after the handle has been first engaged therewith, there is provided an adjusting thumb-screw 9, which projects inzopposite directions through a screw-threaded opening 10, formed in one of the handles andadjacent to its rear or free end. The inner end of the screw is provided with a cireularxed head or finger-piece 11, which is serrated or roughened upon its periphery to insure a tight grip thereon for the fingers 0f the operator. As best indicatedin Fig. 2, it
will be seen that the shank ot the screw projects beyond the outer side of the head, so as to form a stud or projection 12 for engagement with the ad jacent inner side of the opposite handle member in order that the head may be spaced away from said handle member to permit of the head being conveniently grasped for adjustment of the jaws.
1n the operation of the device the holder may be applied in any radial direction to the tool, so that the latter may be brought close so as to be substantially parallel therewith, whereby a straight cut flush with the side of the monument may be made. It will be noted that the adj listing-screw is housed between the handles of the device and also within the vup to the side of the monument or other work,
hand of the operator, so as to be guarded against accidental adjustment to loosen the grip of the jaws, and at the same time is in convenient position for ready adjustment whenever required. Those portions of the members which are opposite the jaws form handgrasps, so that they may be conveniently grasped by one hand to hold the member 1 tightly against the adj listing device, and thus prevent an accidental loosening of the jaws. It will be observed that the seats formed by the inner concaved faces of the jaws have IOO lneu' outer extremities approximating the outer sides of the outer terminals of the jaws, whereby there is but a small portion of the latter that lies between the chisel and the .monument or other work, and thus the incli- `nation of the chisel is reduced to the mini` mental-y jaws carried transversely at correspending ends of the handle members, the inner faces of the jaws having complementary concaved seats extending for the entire lengths of the jaws and forming an approximate annulus when the jaws are closed, the outer terminal of each seat approximating the outer side of the outer terminal of the jaw, and an adjusting device for the handlemeinbers.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MABERY CllAS. RODE'YBERGEII.
