TRAVELING BAG. (inflation mod An 1. 1901-) I0 lodol.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ATHELSTAN H. CHRISTIE, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
TRAVELING-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,942, dated July 9, 1901.
Application filed April 25, 1901- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ATHELs'rAN H. CHRIS- TIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling-Bags and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its objectto provide traveling-bags having bottom trays independent of other compartments of the bags and to which ready accessis had when said bags are opened, said invention consisting in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawing and subsequently claimed.
The drawing is a perspective view illustrating the framing, bottom tray, and a portion of a completed main compartment of a traveling-bag embodying my improvements. 7
Referring by letter to the drawing, A indicates each of a pair of bows in a travelingbag frame made in accordance with my invention, these bows being made to have one of the same lap the other when the bag is closed, but, unlike the bows of an ordinary traveling-bag, they are made longer at the ends and not hinged together. Shown connected to each bow by angle-pieces b is a stiff strip 13, that is Virtually an inner flange of said bow at right angles to the same, and the ends of the strip are bent outward, preferably on curves, although they may be made otherwise, according to the design of the bag. To the strips 13 is fastened the covering 0 of the bag, and while I have shown said strips made separate from the bows A and joined to the same by the angle-pieces?) it is practical and within the scope of my invention to make them integral with said bows out of angle-iron, as is a common practice in the manufacture of ordinary traveling-bag frames. The outwardly-bent ends of the flange'portion B of each bow'are connected by a brace D and are herein shown hinged to extremities of bottom bars E, it being preferable, as is also herein shown, to employ other braces F, connecting the endsof the bow and flange. The
bows with their peculiar flanges, the braces,
Serial No. 57,405. (No model.)
and the bars in the arrangement specified sections G H of an ordinary traveling-bag lock are shown in connection with the flanges of the frame-b'ows; but their construction and disposition constitute no part of my inven-' tion, and in accordance with the demands of the trade it is possible to vary the detail of the frame in some particulars without departure from the scope of said invention. A stiff rectangular bottom piecelis shown made fast to the under sides of the frame-bars E, and end pieces Jof contour matching the bent ends of the bow-flanges B are shown secured on said frame-bars,these end pieces being connected by walls K, to either of which a cover (not shown) will be hinged if demanded by the trade. It is preferable in some instances, as herein shown, to utilize partitions L to divide the tray formed by the bag-bottom, end pieces J, and walls K into compartments. Fast to the braces D and outwardly-bent ends of the bow-flange B of each hinged frame-section is a web M, that forms part of a main compartment of the bag, and this web comes over one-half of the bottom tray when said bag is closed to of itself form a portion of a cover for said tray.
Having thus described my invention,'what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A traveling-bag frame the bow-flanges of which have outwardly-bent hinge-terminals, and braces connecting the bends.
2. A traveling-bag frame the bow-flanges of which are outwardly bent, and transverse bottom bars to the extremities of which are hinged the terminals of said flanges.
3. A traveling-bag frame the bow-flanges of which have outwardly-bent hinge-terminals, and braces connecting the bends of the flanges with the bows. v
4:- A traveling-bag frame the bow-flanges of which are outwardly bent transvorsebottom bars hinged at their extremitiesto terminals of said flanges, and braces connecting the bends.
5. A traveling-bag frame, the bow-flanges of which are outwardly bent, transverse bottom bars hinged at their extremities to termiformed by the aforesaid bottom piece, end
pieces and walls into compartments.
8. A trm eling-bag frame comprising a bottom tray, bow-flanges having outwardly-bent terminals in hinge connection with the tray, the contour of the bends matching that of the tray ends; and tray-cover sections in connection with said bends.
9. A traveling-bag frame comprising a bottom tray, bow-flanges having outwardly-bent terminals in hinge connection with the tray,- the contour of the bends matching that of the tray ends; braces connecting said bends, and tray-cover sections in connection with the braces and aforesaid bonds.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
A. H. CHRISTIE.
