No. 677,168. Patented June 25, l90l. J. BEG LEY.
CLEANING DEVICE.

NiTnn STATES PATENT Trice.
JOHN BEGLEY, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEYV YORK.
CLEANING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,168, dated June 25, 1901.
Application filed February 25, 1901. Serial No. (N0 model To (I/ZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN BEGLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gloversville, Fulton county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oleaning Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a device adapted to be carried by a car, more especially an electricallypropelled car, and operated therefrom for clearing or removing from the railway-rails or the trolley-line the thin layer of ice which in certain seasons of the year and in certain latitudes forms thereon and causes great difficulty in the'operation of the road.
To this end the invention includes a cleaning-wheel located in advance of the wheels of the car or the trolley-wheel, with means for rotating the same, and a series of loose chains secured at one of their ends to the periphery of said cleaning-wheel, which provide arms or cutters to strike against and break away the layer of ice on the rail or trolley-line as the wheel rotates.
The invention also includes the details of structure herein described, and pointed out in the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a portion of a car with the device secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the device.
The car-body 1 is mounted upon the front truck 2 in any well-known or improved manner. Directlyin advance of each front wheel 3 and mounted upon the ends of a cross-shaft 4t, journaled in the truck 2, a wheel 5 is located, which is provided with two or more flanges 6, having peripheral openings 7 extending through the same.
In each opening 7 the inner end of a short chainsection 8 is secured, these chains hang ing loose from their point of attachment, so that as the wheels are rotated they will fly on twardly.
As the wheels 5 are mounted in close proximity to the part to be cleaned of ice, the free portions of the chains will strike against and cut or break away the layer of ice, thus exposing the surface of said parts to the wheel running thereon.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the device is shown as applied to a car for cleaning railway-rails, the shaft carrying the wheels being rotated by a sprocket-chain connection between the sprocket-wheels fixed to the shaft 4.- and. the axle of the front wheel 3, respectively. It will be understood, however, that the invention is not confined to the application, location, or precise manner of rotating the wheel shown herein.
I claim The combination with a car having a wheel and a way on which said wheel runs, of a cleaner comprising a second wheel, a series of short chain-sections, each consisting of a plurality of interlocking links secured at their ends to the periphery of said second wheel and means for rotating the wheel, said second wheel being journ aled in such close proximity to said way that the major portions of each chain-section will strike against the way during the rotation of the wheel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BEGLEY.
