CARD-HOLDER FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HARVEY H. DU 13013, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, county of Scott, State of Iowa, have invented an Improvement in'Oard-Holders for Type-Writing Machines, of which the fol; lowing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention is intended as an improvement upon the apparatus shown in'United States Patent No. 486,036, dated November 9, 1892. I

The object of the invention to be described is the production of a card-holder which may be more readily applied to and removed from a type-writing machine having feed-rollers, a bank of keys, and type moved by said keys.

In the patent referred to ears at the ends of a card-holder, made as a trough, receive through them looselythe screw-threaded rods, pivoted at their upper ends upon a part of the frame of the machine, represented as a Hammond, said rods receiving upon them below said ears suitable nuts, which might be rotated on said threaded rods to adjust the cardholder vertically that the type might be made to print a line at the proper distance from the upper end of the card. In the invention to be herein described I employ a support for the card-carrier, said support beingadapted to rest upon or be sustained by a part of the machine with which the card-holder is used; but this is not essential so long as the carrier is sustained in the proper position with relation to the usual feeding-rollers.

The carrier herein shown is free to be inserted in and to be withdrawn from its operative position with relation to the type-writing machine, and the carrier has at its opposite ends adj usting-screws'which may be retated freely in either direction, said screws in engagement with threaded ears of the cardholder being adapted to move the card-holder adjustably to enable the printed line to be made at the desired point.

Figure 1 shows my improved cardholder and carrier as applied to a type-writing machine of the class known as Hammond.

Fig. 2 shows in end view a part of the cardholder and the carrier; and Fig. 3, in side elevation, shows a portion of the card-holder and the carrier.

The frame or yoke part A, the feed-rollers B O, the type-carrier D, and the throat E are common to the said Hammond machine, and in practice said machine will have coacting with it suitable banks of keys to move the type-carrier and other parts.

In accordance with my invention the cardholder a, made as a trough, has at its ends suitable lugs b, which are screw-threaded. Each lug receives the threaded shank of a suitable screw, as 0, provided with a milled head (1-. The milled head of each screw is represented as embraced between the ends 9 of a carrier f, said carrier having an attached plate 9, which contacts Withthe inner side of said milled head. The carrier is represented as provided with suitable holders, as h, represented as springs adapted to engage frictionallya part of the frame of the type-writrng machine as, for instance, the yoke A. The carrier having the card-holder attached to it adj ustably may be readily shoved into position in the yoke A, and the carrier will rest upon said yoke, or it may be any other suitable part of a type-writing machine or any suitable part located below the usual feeding-rollers of a type-writing machine, and with the carrier in its operative position the springs h act by their friction to maintain the carrier in its operative position.

To adjust the card-holder vertically with relation to the carrier F, which remains seated upon its support, the operator has only to engage the milled heads at and rotate the screws 0', the threaded parts thereof turning in the threaded parts of the ears b, raising or lowering the card-holder, as maybe desired, that the card may be located properly with relation to the type and the line to be printed and that the said line may be placed at the desired distance from either end of the card.

This invention is not limited to the shape shown for'the springs or devices to engage a fixed part of the type-writing apparatus to thereby retain the carrier in its operative position, yet permit it to be readily removed,

and instead I may use any other frictional means for holding the carrier in its operative position.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a card-holder, a carrier to sustain the same, and yielding means to frictionally retain said carrier in connection with a type-writing machine.

2. A card-holder, a carrier to sustain said holder and springs provided on the carrier and adapted for engagement with a type-Writing machine for frictionally retaining the carrier in place.

3. A card-holder, a carrier, means on the carrier for adj nstably sustaining the holder and springs provided on the carrier and adapted for engagement with a type-writing machine for frictionally and removably retaining the carrier in place.

4. A card-holder having threaded lugs at its ends, combined with a'carrier, and adj 11sting devices loosely seated at the opposite ends of said carrier and engaging the threaded lugs of the card-holder, the rotation of said adjusting devices moving the card-holder relatively to the carrier to place the card in the desired position in a type-writing machine.
