TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MARTIN V. B. WHITE, of the village of Ballston, in the county of Saratoga, and State of New Yorkdiave invented a certain new and improved Window-Fastener or Lock; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form and make a part of this specification.
Like letters represent and refer to like or corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a view of a window having attached thereto my improved fastener or lock, in connection with my improved sash-supporter heretofore patented by me, each being more fully hereinafter described and'set forth.
Figure 2 is a crosssection through the window A, and window-frame B,'shown atg. 1, showing the various devices connected with my said invention, as fully hereinafter described and set forth.
Figure 3 is a view of the lock or stop C, which is for the purpose of locking the window when the same is closed, and operating in the manner substantially as hereinafter described and set forth.
Figures 4, 5, and 6 `show the various parts and devices of my improved window-catch or sash-supporter, heretofore patented, bearing date June Q6, 1866, and to which it is designed to attach the locks or stop C, shown at figs. 2 and 3, and operating in the manner and for the purposes substantiallyas hereinafter 'described and. sct forth.
The nature of my said invention and improvements consists in the employment of a suitably-constructed device, C, or its equivalent, in combination with my improved sashlsupporter, and so operated and worked that by means thereof the window may, when closed, be permanently fastened and held in that position, and prevent the said window from beingV opened from the outside, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein described and set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention relates to make and use the same, I will here proceed todescrbe the 'construction and operation of thesame, which is as'follows, to wit:
A and B, gs. I and Z2, show a window and window-casing, attached to which is my improved sash-supporter,
fully described and setv forth in the specification of the Letters Patent granted to me Junei, 1866. upon the same. Into and on 'the side of the window-sash D, and at a suitable position, I cut a mortis'e or recess, D, into which I place, and secure by any suitable mechanism, the lock or stop C, which is made of metal, and of any shape and size deemed best. The said lock or stop Chas a projection, E, upon the same, which acts as a wedge, and prevents the window from being raised when the same is closed, substantially as hereinafter deseribel.
The operation of my said invention' is as follows, to wit: The said lock is placed at a point in the said sash B, so that when the said window iselosed, as seen at 1 and 2, tlielock being seif-acting, willfall forward and into the recess or space between the roller F and thc upper end of the recess H, substantially as shown at iig. 2. By this means the window is securely fastened, and cannot be opened from the outside, as the projection E would strike against the upper part of the recess H, and eifcctually prevent it, should it be attempted. When it is desired to open the said window, the roller F, being pushed upward bymeans of thearmI and thumbpiece J, raises the said lock or stop C, and forces the' same into the recess or niortise D, cut into the windowsash, and in this position the window uiay be raised to any desired point; but whenever the said window is closefh'the loch or stop C being self-acting, will fall into the space between the roller F and the upper part of the recess II, and e'ectually prevent the raising of the window from the outside, as fully hcreinbefore described and set forth. rlhe said lock or stop C may be made of any met-a1 deemed best, and ofisuch shape and constructionlas will best answer the required purpose, and it may be connected with and combined to the saidrecess or mortise D in the window-sash in any manner and by any means thought b est.
By this means I am enabled to produce a lock or window-fastening which is self-acting in allits movements, so that it is impossible to leave the window unlocked when the same is closed, and the 'cost of the same being no more than an ordinary fastening, it must, in consideration of its advantages, commend itself to publie favor.
`Having thus described4 the nature ofv my said invention and improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates, is-
The employment of the loch 0r stop C, or its equivalent, operating. in thc recess or mortise D, cut in the window-sash B, and in combination with the arm I and roller F, in the manner and for 'the purposes substantially as hercinbeforc fully described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of October, A. D. 1865.
MARTIN V. B. WHITE.
