.1. ELLIS. WINDOW WASHER.
(Applichtion led June 6, 1900.)
(No Modal.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPHINE'ELLIS, OF PENN YAN, NEW YORK.
WINDOW- WASHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,366, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed .T une 6, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JosEPHINE ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Penn Yan, in the county of Yates and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Window-Washer, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in window-washers.`
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of window-washers and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to enable a cloth to be readily applied to it without employing clamping devices and capable of spreading the cloth and of holding the same in convenient position for washing windows.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a window-washer constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
l designates an approximately oblongframe composed of longitudinal side andcentral wires 2 and 3 and connecting end wires Iand adapted to receive acloth 5 and hold the same in position for washing a window or other surface. The frame is set at an angle to a handle 6, and the cloth is doubled around the inner side of the frame and extended beneath the central wire 3 and over the outer side, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the outer portion is adapted to lie. against the outer face of the frame when the device is in use. By this construction the cloth is not only se curely' held on the frame, but it is arranged in convenient position for use. The frame is connected with the handle by diverging arms 6a, each of which is substantially L-shaped, the outer portions being shorter than the inner portions and beingarranged at an obtuse angle to the same, as shown in Fig. 2. The
Serial No. 19,289. (No model.)
inner portions of the armsare connected together and with the shank of the hook 8 to form the shank 7 of the device. The shank 7 ofthe device is embedded in the handle, and it is provided with a screw formed by twistingone of its wires and adapted to enable the said shank to be readily screwed into and out of the handle for detachably connecting the latter with the frame. By this construction handles of different lengths may be readily applied to the frame. The bill of the hook is bent outward and arranged adjacent to the handle, which may be employed as a convenient means for practically closing the mouth of the hook to retain anything in engagement with the same. The hook is designed to hold the cloth when the device is employed for washing windows, and it will prevent a wet cloth from swinging around when the device is being handled, especially when the device is removed from a window for the purpose of wetting the cloth or for wringing it out.
It will be seen that the window-washer is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is strong anddurable, and that the cloth is secured to the 'frame without the aid of clamping devices and that the said frame spreads and holds the cloth in position for operating on windows.
What is claimed is- A device of the class described comprising a handle, a pair'of approximately L-shaped arms diver-ging from the handle and having their inner portions forming a shank, the angularly-disposed oblong frame rigid with the arms and provided with the central and side wires, and a hook arranged at the shank of the arms and extending between the same and having its bill located adjacent` to the end of the handle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPIIINE ELLIS.
