UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'JOHN HENRY GILTNER, OF HUTCHISON, KENTUCKY.
CLOSURE FOR MAIL-SACK S.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,897, dated April 30, 1901. Application filed November 9, 1900. Serial NO. 35.917. (No model.)
, tion adapted to hold the mouth of the bag open and also to hold the collapsed sides of. the frame securely closed and locked, and which can be opened and closed with ease and rapidity.
Figure l is a perspective View of the closing-frame extended. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the frame folded with the top or cover thrown back. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the top or cover in closed position.
The frame consists of six bars of steel, preferably flat, hinged together at their ends.
Two of the bars E E are preferably longer than the rest and form the front and back members of the frame. The remaining four members E E E E are disposed two at each end and are so hinged together and t0 the front and rear pieces as to be adapt-ed to fold inwardly at their joints in the middle of the end. The top or cover 0 is formed of a piece of flanged steel, hinged throughoutits length to the rear side of the frame and provided with a hasp, securely fixed to the flat portion of the top and bent over the flange thereof, so as to be adapted to pass onto a staple D, fixed on the front bar, when the top shall be thrown over into closed position. Any look now in use may be employed to secure the hasp on the staple. This frame is provided with rivetholes along the lower edge, so that the sack may be secured thereto without difl'iculty, and when so attached enables the user to readily open or close the pouch with minimum wear to the'weaker material and affording great security and protection to the contents.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An extensible closure for mail-bags comprising in combination a frame formed of six flat metallic bars, one forming the front, one the back, and two at each end so hinged together as to be adapted to fold inwardly, with a covering-flap hinged throughout its length to the rear bar and provided with a depending flange at the front, and a hasp rigidly secured to the top and bent over in front of the front and so placed as to be passed over a staple on the front bar when the covering-flap is forced down.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HENRY GILTNER.
