EDIVARD KASEBIER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, AND CARL VIGELIUS, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
DECORATING ARTICLES OF MANUFACTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 671,519, dated April 9, 1901.
Application filed June 18, 1900. Serial No. 2 ,747- ($pecimens.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD KASEBIER, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and CARL VIGELIUS,
residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DecoratingArticles of Manufacture, of which the following is a specifi- IO cation. 1
Our invention relates to articles the surfaces of which are ornamented; and our invention consists in securing such ornamentation by embossing the body of the article 5 and applying thereto thin overlayers corresponding in contour with the embossed portions, as set forth hereinafter, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 illustrates a face view of an article ornamented in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the body of the article; Fig. 3, a transverse section of the overlayer-sections adapted for application to the embossed portions of the body,
and Fig. 4a transverse section illustrating the completed article.
In carrying out our invention the body A, of any desired shape, form, and proportions, 0 is first molded, and those portions which are to be ornamented by the application of an overlayer are. embossed or formed in a mold in the shape of recesses or projections, or a combination of both, corresponding to any de- 5 sired configuration and degree of elevation or depression. As shownin Fig. 2, these embossed portions are indicated by the parts ct a. The overlayer-sections B are then formed of a material which will adhere under proper treatment to the body A and of thin sheets in a mold corresponding in outline to the outline of the portions or and also corresponding to the latter in their projections and depressions, so as to form at the under sides counterparts thereof, permitting the overlayer-sections to be applied to the ornamented portions a and exactly conforming therewith. The overlayer-sections thus applied are then cemented to the body, both the body and the overlayer being softened by heat or a solvent in such manner that when the overlayer-sections are pressed upon the body and retained there for atime they will be secured thereto, forming a practically homogeneousstructure.
While the body portion and the overlayersections may be made of the same kind of material, the particular application of the invention is in connection with articles the body portions of which are made of plastic shellac composition of one color and the overlayer-sections of another color, but of celluloid, whereby we are enabled to get a cameolike efiect and to construct the articles in an expeditious manner and at a cost of manufacture much less than would otherwise be possible.
Without limiting ourselves to any particular style of ornamentation or to the use of the materials specified, we claim as our invention--- The within-described improvement in decorating articles of manufacture, the same consisting in molding the body of the article with embossed ornamented portions, in then molding thin overlayer-sections corresponding in their inner faces with the contours of the said embossed portions, and then uniting the said sections to the embossed portions of the body of the article, by softening the same and applying pressure to force them together, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD KASE BIER. CARL VIGELIUS.
