Be it known that I, JOSEPH PETER LEN- EARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Guide Attachment for Fishing-Lines, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in line-guides for fishing-rods, and particularly I0 to means for attaching the guide to the pole,

the object being to provide a simpleconstruction for securely attaching the guide to the pole capable of being readily and conveniently applied to different poles.

WVith the above object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, particularly pointed out in the claims, and clearly illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a rod with my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2, a transverse section through the pole; Fig. 3, a front elevation of the attaching-plate before the same is applied to the pole, having the line-guide attached thereto; Fig. 4c, a rear elevation of the same, and Fig. 5 a sectional view on the line w as of Fig. 3.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, A designates the line-guide, which at its respective ends is beveled or out at an inclination, so as to form projecting portions 13 B. This is the usual construction of guide employed in connection with fishing-rods, and

5 the ordinary manner of attaching the same to the rod is by Wrapping thread about said projecting ends B B.

My invention consists in providing an attaching plate 0, formed of thin flexible 4o metalas, for instance, soft brass-having slits D D formed therein at a point intermediately of its ends, said slits being spaced from each other and arranged parallel, as clearly illustrated by Figs. 3, 4, and 5 of the drawings. Said plate is formed on its inner side and at the ends of the slits with pockets D, corresponding in outline to the outline of the ends of the line-guide, said pockets being formed by punching the metal outwardly.

The line-guide A is attached to this plate by inserting its projecting ends B B in said slits D D, so that the same project to what is the rear face of the plate, when it is applied to the pole, said projecting ends B B fitting in the pockets D, so that their inner surfaces are substantially flush with the inner surface of the plate 0.

In applying the plate to the pole the same is bent around the circumference of the latter, and it is of sufficient size to permitits ends to overlap. The overlapping ends are then bent or clenched against the pole, as illustrated at E in Fig. 2. If desired, the plate may be otherwise secured to the pole; but by securing the same thereto as above set forth it is securely held in position and prevented from slipping.

By providing the metallic attaching-plate the use of the threads is avoided, thus making a more satisfactory method of attaching the guide to the pole, as the Water affects the threads, which is not the case with the metallic plate.

From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple attaching means for securing the lineguide to a fishingpole, the same possessing advantages over the old method of using thread for this purpose.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 0f the United States, is-

1. The combination with a flexible plate formed with parallel spaced slits, of a lineguide having projecting end portions which are inserted through said slits, substantially as described.

2. A line-guide for fishing-rods and means for securing the same to the rod, comprising a flexible plate to be wrapped about the rod and secured thereto, and formed with parallel, spaced slits, and a loop having projecting portions at its ends and positioned upon the outer side of said plate with its ends extending through said slits and positioned upon the rear sideof the plate, between the same and the rod, substantially as described.

3. The combination with a rod, of a metallic band placed about said rod and having its ends clenched, and formed with two parallel spaced slits, of a line-guide having project ing portions at its ends and positioned upon the outer side of the plate with the projecting portions extending through said slits to the rear side thereof, substantially as described.
