Be it known that I, EDWARD PALMER LE COMPTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Park City, in the county of Summit and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blacking-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My present invention relates to improvements in blacking-brushes.

My object is to provide a brush of this character with means for removing mud and dirt from the shoes without soiling the polishingbrush and dauber.

Considered in its specific aspect, the invention consists in providing a polishing-brush with a supplemental dirt-removing brush at one edge of its back and with a detachable handle provided with a dauberand a scraper which lies flat and unobtrusively against the front of the brush back or block when not in use, but which when the handle is detached may be employed for the purpose of scraping mud and dirt from the shoes preparatory to the blacking and polishing thereof.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my brush complete. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof with the handle turned transversely to the back. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the handle removed. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the handle detached, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the handle-1ocking device.

Referring to the numerals of reference designating corresponding parts and features in the several views, 1 indicates a polishingbrush, the back or block 2 of which is recessed at one end of one side edge for the reception of the back 3 of a dirt-brush at, whose bristles are preferably somewhat stiffer than those of the brush 1.

5 indicates the brush-handle, the shank or foot 6 of which lies fiat against the upper surface of the block 2 and is provided at or near its front end with the usual dauber or blackingbrush 7, disposed oppositely to the brush 1 and designed to be used alternately therewith by the complete reversal of the device.

As thus far described the brush is of ordinary construction; but I have provided as essential features of the present invention a scraper 8, secured at the extremity of the handle-shank by a tine 9, extending between the shank and the block 10 of the dauber and preferably fastened in place by the screw 11, which retains the block 10 upon said shank. Furthermore, I have provided the handle with means for detachably securing it in place upon the block 2 to permit of its being detached therefrom when it is desired to use the scraper 8. This handle-securing means preferably comprises a recess 19 in the block 2, covered by a locking-plate 13, having a transverse slot 14 for the reception of a T-lug 15, extending from the under side of the handle-shank 6 and having its head disposed at a transverse angle with respect thereto. The head of the lug 15 is passed through the slot 14, and the handle is then swung in line with the longitudinal center of the block 2, which then becomes out of alinement with the lug-head and slot and forces the end of the handle-shank 6 under a spring-catch 16, located at the end of the said block. The device is now manipulated in the usual way until it is desired to use the scraper, when, as will be obvious, the handle is swung around until the locking-lug can be slipped from the slot and the detachment of the handle effected.

Any desired form of scraper may be employed; but I prefer to provide a square blade 17, extending below the tine 9, and knife 18, extending upwardly from the blade, to one side of the tine, and having a cutting edge 19 to facilitate the removal of worn portions of the shoe.

From the foregoing it will be observed that I have produced a blacking-brush of great efficiency and constructed with such simplicity as to render its manufacture inexpensive; but while the present embodiment of my invention appears to be preferable I do not Wish to limit myself to the structural details defined, but reserve the right to effect such changes, modifications, and variations as may fall properly within the scope of the protection prayed.
