NIIED STATES MICHAEL M. NOLT, OF EARL TOWNSHIP, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ADAM H. WEAVER, OF BLUE BALL, PENNSYLVANIA.
TONGUE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 668,338, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed March 13, 1900. Serial No- 8,459- (No model.)
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL M. NOLT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Earl township, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Tongue-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in supports for the tongues of various agricultural machines; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, compact, and efficient arrangement of parts adapted for yieldingly attaching a rolling support or wheel-colter to the tongue of an agricultural machine, and, second, to locate the wheelcolter beneath the center of the tongue and at the same time avoid undue weakening of the tongue.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts, as hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a tongue having my tonguesupport attached thereto; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, a top plan view; and Fig. 4., a transverse section on broken line 4 4 of Fig. 2, the doubletree and the singletrees being removed.
Similar letters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the details of the drawings, A indicates the tongue to which the wheel-colter is applied.
B B indicate uprightly-disposed hangerbars located on opposite sides of and adjacent to the tongue A, and the lower ends of hangerbars B B are connected by a bolt or hingerod 19. These hanger-bars are inclined from their upper ends downward and forward toward the front end of the tongue, and they are held in place and clamped against the tongue by a clip, which consists of clip-bars D, a bolt D uniting the clip-bars at their upper ends and a bolt D uniting the clip-bars at their lower ends. The clip-bars D are supported by bolt D, that rests upon the tongue A, and from the bolt D said clip-bars are also inclined downward and forward, passing outside and to the front of hanger-bars B B, the
bolt D bearing against the front edges of said hanger-bars.
E indicates a bar formed of spring metal and having one end secured to the under side of the tongue A and in front of the hangerbars and the clip by a bolt 6 and a nut c. From bolt 6 spring-bar E extends rearwardly and downwardly to the hinge-rod I), connecting the lower ends of hanger-bars B B, around which hinge-rod b the lower end E of said spring-bar is bent, wherebya hinge-joint is formed between hanger-bars B B and springbar E.
On the top of spring-bar E and somewhat nearer to the hinge-joint E 1) than to the bolt 6 is a reinforce-plate E Supported in an opening through said bar E and plate E is a depending journal F, whereon is jourualed a frame comprising a vertical bearing F and curved arms F between which arms a wheelcolter G is mounted on a short shaft f, journaled in said arms F It will be observed that by my construction the tongue is only cut for the opening for the bolt 6, whereto the front end of the springbar E is attached, but that where the rear end of said spring-bar is connected with the tongue and where the strain is greater thereon the cross-section of said tongue is not in any way reduced and that the wheel-colter is located beneath the center of the to..gue.
The Wheel-colter can be adjusted vertically with reference to the tongue byloosening one or both of the nuts d and d on the ends, respectively, of bolts D and D connecting the clip-bars D, and to detach the support from the tongue of one machine to apply it to that of another it is only necessary to remove bolt 6 and one or the other of the bolts of clip-bars D. In attaching the colter-wheel it can be adjusted to be held in proper relation to a tongue held at any height above the ground,
and the height of the tongue above the ground does not in any way affect the efficiency of the action of the colter-wheel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a tongue-support, of a spring-bar having one end secured to the tongue, a hanger supporting the other end of the spring-bar in fixed relation to the tongue, a hinge connection between said other end of the spring-bar and the hanger, and a wheelcolter connected with the spring-bar between the supports of said bar, for the purpose specifled.
2. The combination, in a tongue-support, of a spring-bar having one end attached to the tongue, a hanger vertically adjustable on the tongue, a hinge connection between the other end of the spring-bar and said hanger, and a Wheel-colter connected with the spring-bar between the supports of said bar, for the purpose specified.
3. The combination, in a tongue-support, of hanger-bars disposed on opposite sides of the tongue, a hinge-rod connecting the lower ends of the hanger-bars, means for adjustably securing the hanger-bars to the tongue, a spring-bar having its front end removably secured to the tongue and its rear end hinged to said hinge-rod, and a wheel-colter connected with the springbar, for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, in a tongue-support, of hanger-bars disposed on opposite sides of the tongue, a hinge-rod connecting the lower. ends of the hanger-bars, clip-bars on the outside of the hanger-bars, a bolt connecting the u pper ends of the clip-bars and resting on the tongue in rear of the hanger-bars, a bolt connecting the lower ends of the clip-bars and located in front of the hanger-bars, a spring-bar having its front end reinovably secured to the tongue and its rear end hinged to said hingerod, and a wheel-colter connected with the spring-bar, for the purpose specified.
5. The combination, in a tongue-support, of hanger-bars disposed on opposite sides of the tongue, a hinge-rod connecting the lower ends of the hanger bars, clip-bars on the outside of the hanger-bars, a bolt connecting the upper ends of the clip-bars and resting on the tongue in rear of the hanger-bars, a bolt conmeeting the lower ends of the clip-bars and bearing against the front of the hanger-bars, a spring-bar having its front end removably secured to the tongue and its rear end hinged to said hinge-rod, a reinforce-plate on the upper side of the spring-bar, a depending journal in an'opening through the springbar and the reinforce-plate, a frame swiveled on said journal, and a wheel'colter on a shaft carried by said frame, substantially as and for the purpose specified. v
