GARMENT'WAIST CLOSURE.
(Application filed Aug. 26. 1599.)
(Nujlo'deL) I M c jvwentoz UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ELIAS GOODMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
GARMENT-WAIST CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 5,518, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed August 2 1899. Serial No. 728,531. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS GOODMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to the construction and arrangement of trousers, and has for its object the provision of a garment simple and cheap in construction wherein the usual suspender-buttons and gathering-strap are dispensed with, greatly contributing to the ease of the garment upon the wearer, and wherein means are provided for securing the pockets against loss of articles therefrom or the removal of such articles from the body of the wearer by unauthorized persons.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists, essentially, in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts or peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a parthereof, Figure l is a front elevation of the upper portion of a pair of trousers embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation'of the same.
Similar numerals of reference wherever they occur indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
1 is the body of the trousers, made in the usual manner, but without the usual Waistband. Instead of such band I use a wide band or sash 2, made of the same material as the legs and body of the trousers or of any other kind or style of material. By this means remnants or pieces of goods too scanty for trousers of the usual construction may be readily utilized. Instead of the wide band a gathered sash may be employed, such band or sash being permanently secured to the portion 1 of the garment. Beginning at 5, at one side of the button-flap 3 at a point over one of the hips of the wearer, the band 2 is directly secured to the body of the garment, and it is so secured up to the buttonhole-fiap 4, where it is disconnected and is free.
6 is a strap of elastic material secured to the inside of the band 2, and 7 is a hook affixed to the elastic strip 6 for engaging with an eye 8 near the fixed extremity of the band 2.
9 is a socket upon the band 2, near the extremity of the free portion thereof, which receives a stud 10 when the band is connected around the person.
11 represents loops fixed at intervals within the body of the garment, and L2 is an elastic belt which passes freely through said loops. By this means the garment is secured around the person of the wearer, being sustained in a free and comfortable manner, and the use of the ordinary unsightly straps and buckle at the center of the trousers at the back is dispensed with. When the garment is upon the person and the belt buckled, the front is then closed, and the engaging devices of the band or sash are secured in place thereover.
13 is asecret pocketplaced within the free portion of the band or sash 2. This pocket has a button 14, secured within the pocket at the back, arranged to engage with a button hole 15 in the front portion.
16 is a flap for drawing over the top of the pocket after the same has been closed, the flap having a buttonhole 17, which engages a button l8,t hus effectually closing the pocket, and as the same is within the band or sash 2 when secured around the person it is impossible to remove or reach the contents of such pocket without releasing the free end of the band or sash and unbuttoning the top of the pocket. Pockets 19 and 20 are provided at the rear of the trousers arranged in precisely the same manner, but left uncovered. The side pockets 21 and 22 may also be provided with closing-buttons.
When constructed and arranged in accordance with the foregoing description, it will be seen that I provide a very desirable garment which may be worn without suspenders, giving the wearer the greatest possible ease and freedom of movement, the garment at the same time being neat and attractive in appearance and having many advantages over trousers of ordinary construction.
Having nowfully described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The trousers herein described, comprising the upper body portion, a band permanently secured to the upper edge thereof, one end of vided with means for uniting it with the fixed such band being fixed to the trousers at at end at 5, and an elastic belt secured to the point, 5, which is over one hip of the wearer, inside of the body portion of the trousers, the band extending thence around the back substantially as set forth.
