Description
www v @einen tairs* @anni @fitta L. r.. WILcoX," or sito oKLrN, NEW YORK Letters Patent No. 66,434, dated July 2, 1867. i
IMPROVEMENTIN MODE 0F ATTAGHING TOOLS TO THEIR HANDLES.
To ALL YWHOM IT MAY eoNeEEN; e
`Be it known that I, L. P. WILCOX, of- Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings, and State of ew York,
`have invented a new and iinproved Tool-Handle; and I do hereby declare that the followingr isa/full, clear, and
exact description of the same, reference being` .had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion ofthis specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a tool-handle constructed according tomyinvention. Figure 2 is. a longitudinal section of the samc,'talcen at .ri-ghtangles to lig. l. Similar letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in bothgurcs.
rIbis-invention consists in the cotubin'ation of a sliding compressing ferrule, with a wooden or o'therhandle divided longitudinallyfpr .a portion of its length, and furnished with a central longitudinal slot or' cavity, whereby theehiselfiilc, o r other Atool may b'e very conveniently and securely attached to the handle, andat the 'saine/time becapable of Being readily detached or removed therefrom when required.
To enable others to understand the construction and operation of my invention, I will proceed todcscribe it with reference to the drawings. 1 v 'd The handle proper is shown 'at A, and may be of wood or other suitable material, and for the most part of' any desired `or appropriate form, but with a portion at one end thereof *made/tapering as shown at a in the drawings. Formed centrally within this handle A, and extendingfrom the extremity of the tapcringportion a nearly to the opposite ond of ,the handle, is a longitudinal/slot or cavity, l, which may be of'cireular or "cylindrical form, and Which is designed to receive the'shahnl: of the chisel, iile, or other tool, :is will hereinafter be fully Vset forth. The tapering portion a, andltlso that part; ot' the handle immediately behind such -tapering ortion thereof, is divided lonwitu/dinall b Aa narrow slit i c which extends cntirel throuffh the handle, as P D .Y [Y i 7 n indicated more clearly in iig. 2, and which intersects the'central slot -or cavity Zi. The ferrule is represented at B, and is made of any desired length, and of atapering form, withits interior corresponding in shape and size to the outer or smaller part ot' the tapering portion a 'ofthe handle A, in such manner that when the ferrule B is, driycn back upon the aforesaid tapering portion a, it will compress the saine, narrowing the slit c, and diminishing the diameter ofthe outermostend of the slot or cavity b, or, in other words, forcing toward each other the two opposite sides of the longitudinally-divided tapering portion a just mentioned. i
The shank of thc tile or chisel is inserted in the slot or cavity 6, as indicated in re`d outline in lig. 2, with seine little space betweenits extremity and the inner end ofthe aforesaid`- slot, in order that any possibility of splitting the handle A iuay be avoided'. The ferrule' B is'thcn forced or driven baci: upon thc 'tapering portion at, and compressing the Said portion, as hereinbef'ore enplained, causes thesllank of the tool to be firmly griped or clamped between the two opposite sides of the aforesaid portion a, and thus rigidly secures the tool in the handle. When it is desired to detach the tool from the handle, the ferrule B is simply driven forward upon the portiona, which being thus relieved from the compressieg action ot' the ferrule, expands and releases its lhold upon the shank-of the tool. Theshank ofthe tool is thus grasped or. held within the handle when the ferrule is -moved or slid inward, and released when such ferrnle is moved or slidoutward. instead otra single slit, c, thetapering portion of the handle may be divided'b'y two or inore similar slits situated 'in Aa position radial to the central slot b of the said handle, the actionof-the sliding fcrrule B, in compressing or releasing thc aforesaid tapering portion ofthe handle, being the same as when a single slit, extendii'ig entirely through'the handle from side teside, as hereinbefore fully described, is ernployed I am aware that brad-awls and similar tools have been provided with expanding holders forming shanks to be inserted in woodenv handles, as in the patent ot'l H. Heinenway, September 4, 1828; these therefore I do not claim, but what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The wood stock or handle A, constructed withits one end a tapering` and slotted longitudinally as at c, in combination with thc tapering lsliding ferrule B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
