TITTLE.
Leners Patent No. 66,418, dans Juzg 2, 1867.
IMPROVED GAR-COUPLINGS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. TITTLE, of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings, and the mode of operating them; and .I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, of its construction and operation, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication," in which-'- Figure 1 is a perspective viewinverted. Y
Figure 2 is a view of draught-head secured.
Figure 8 isa cross-section view from beneath.
The same letters indicate like parts.
The nat-ure of my invention consists of constructing the draught-bar with a hing-e,.placed at any suitable point between the draw-beam andthe h'ead of the said draught-bar, whereby the head is rendered free to move in a lateral direction, while the end of the bar will be held rigid in the drawLbeam. vTo ease the coupling-heads, when being detached, I place a lever against the back end of the draught-bar and connect with its long en d a rodor chain, or both, whichis properly attached-to the rack-wheel or segment-shaft, which shaft, when operated to throw the coupling-heads aside, will also draw the lever against the end of the draught-bar, and forceit forward and thereby ease the uncouplings. To enable a person to uncouple the cars from the ground, I provide a lever on the 'under side of one of the outer beams of the car, one end of which has a rack, which operates ina second rack provided-on the endof the rack-bar, which, when pulled out, throws the coupling-head to one side and at the same time operates the easing lever; To adapt cars of varying heights provided with the ordinary links for coupling with the coupling of my invention,'I provide two or more slots4 horizontally cut in the ends of the double hook-heads, in either of which the links may be inserted; and to serine the heads together rmly I make `in the heads an oblong hole, which r'uns down perpendicular through the whole depth of the head, and into one of these perpendicular holes I drop one leg of binding clevis, which is made U-shaped, while the other leg drops down back of the coupling-head or in the perpendicular hole ofthe co-acting coupling-head. By these improvements cars can be as readily uncoupled by a person standing on the ground on the side of a car as when on the platform, and when coupled can be secured frombeing disconnected while turning a curve, as has been proved by actual test.; and cars with ordinary coupling-links with varying heights can also be accommodated.
In the drawings, A, gs. 1 and 3, represents the under side of a platform or a car, to which thc coupling is attached. The draught-bar a `a is made in two pieces and provided with a hinge, c, placed at any suitable point between the draw-beam and the double hook-head a', which permits the head to move in a lateral direction. Back of the draw-beam b, and against the end of the draught-bar a, is placed a lever, e, the short end of which is held'by a suitable fulcrum,j`. This lever e has provided on its longest end a suitable eye, or its equivalent, to which is connected a 'rod or chain,g, or both, which rod or chain is attached to the rack-wheel or segmentshaft 8, which rack-wheel'shaf't, when turned in either direction, throws the double hook-head d to one side; tud
at the same time draws, by the rod g, the lever e' against the end of the draught-bar a and throws` it forward,v -so that byboth the side andforward movements of the double hook-heads (shown by the dotted lines d', fig. 3)
the cars can be nncoupled with ease. To uncouple cars without the aid of the hand-wheel, Iprovide on one of the side beams A of the car a suitable lever, la, which turns on a proper pivot. The short end of this lever terminates in a rack, L, which works another 'rack, z, on the end of shifting-bar k; and when' the long end of the lever is pulled out or pressed in the end rack /Loperates the shifting-bar 7c and throws the double headd to one side, and at thesame time operates the easing lever e and throws the head forward the same as if the operation were performed by the rack-wheel shaft .sA To adapt my invention to the ordinary links used in coupling, and/'to the varying heights of cars, I make in the face of the double hook-headsfd two or more horizontal slots m m. Into any of these slots the ordinary coupling-linksl can be inserted and secured by a suitable pin, as in the ordinary way; and to prevent the cars from uncoupling whenon a curve, &c., (as experiment has shown they will do when no t secured,) I make a perpendicular hoie, n, through the whole' depth of the head d, through which I insert one leg of the U-shaped clevis O, igs.`2 and 3,' and drop the other leg down back of the lread d,
or in asimilar hole, n', of a co-acting head.. Both legs of said clevis are made of suicient length to preclude all possibility of its jumping out by :my jolting.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to -secure by Letters Patent, iis- 1. I claim the lever e, fulcrumf, and the rod or chain g, or both, in combination with the-rock-wheel shaft vs, as and for the purpose described.
.as and for the purposes set forth and described.
2. I claim the lever h, with the rack h ond the rack in combination with theshifting-bar k, for the purpose set forth and described.
3. I claim the hinged'dreught-bai' a a, in combination with the lever e, `l'ulc'ruin f, rod and chain g, or both,
operated by the lever L or rack-wheel shaft s, as and for the purposes described.
4. I claim the hook-head coupling perforated as described,v in combination with the clevis O, or its equivalent,v
DANIEL J. TITTLE.
