HARTWELL It. MOORE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE COMSTOCK, CHENEY dt COMPANY, OF IVORYTON, CONNECTICUT.
PIANO-ACTEON..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,168, dated December 18, 1900.
Application led June 14,1899. serai No. 720,446. da model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known thatl, HAETWELL R. MOORE, oli' Boston, in the countyof Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Piano-Actions, of which the following is a specification, reference beinel had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation of a portion of a piano-action, showing the position of the various parts when the soft pedal is not applied. Fig. 2 is a like elevation showing,` the position of the parts when the soft pedal is applied.
The object of my invention is to provide means for taking up the lost motion which is present in a piano-action when the soft pedal is applied; and my invention consists in the combination, with the key, hammer-actuating mechanism, the hammer-rail, and the pedalrod connected with said rail, of a member located between the key and ham mer-actuating mechanism, movable bodily between said parts when said rail is moved to take up the lost motion between said parts.
In the drawings, A represents the pedalrod, which is connected in the usual manner at its lower end with the soft pedal of the instrument and at its upper end with a block a, fast to the movable hammer-rail Ct, against which latter rests the shank b of hammer B, and the lower end of shank b is fast in block b, which is pivoted to the frame of the instrument. The block h is engaged by jack c, mounted on pilot-lever c2, which also has connected with it the extension c3.
The main feature of this invention is the movable member g, which is made in the form of a wedge and located between capstan el on keyD and the lowerend of extension c3. Vedge g is pivotally connected with a rail G by a hinge-joint to the frame ot' the instrument and is movable bodily between extension c3 and capstan d.
The purpose of the bodily-movable wedge g is to take up the lost motion between the key D and extension c3 when the soft pedal of the instrument is operated and rail a is moved, and in order that wedge g may be moved in the proper direction and at the proper time a link A is provided, which is pivotally connected at one end to block a and at its other lower end to rail G.
The operation is as follows: When the soft pedal is applied, rod A is moved endwise and hammer B moved into a position nearer to string` M. At the same time that hammer B is moved link A swings rail G, and thereby moves wedge g bodily in a direction to raise extension c3, pilot-lever c2, and jack c, so that jack c is maintained in proper relation to block b in both positions of the hammer and there is no lost motion between extension cS and capstan d.
Vthat I claim as my invention isl. In a piano-action the combination of a key; hammer-actuating mechanism; a movable hammer-rail; a pedal-rod; a member movable between the key and hammer-actuating mechanism but not connected with the latter, and means for operating` the movable member.
2. In a piano-action the combination of a key; hammcir-actuating,v mechanism; a movable hammer-rail; a pedal-rod; a wedge movable between the key and hammer-actuating` mechanism but not connected with the latter, and means for operating` the wedge.
In a piano-action the combination of a key; hammer-actuating` mechanism; a movable hammer-rail; a pedal-rod; a member movable between the key and hammer-actuating mechanism but not connected with the latter, and means connected with the hammerrail for operating` the movable member when the rail is moved.
4. In a piano-action the combination of a key; hammer-actuating mechanism; a movable ham mer-rail; a pedal-rod; a wedge movable between the key and hammer-actuating` mechanism but not connected with the latter, and means connected with the hammerrail for operating' the wedge when the rail is moved.
