Letters Patent No. 66,341, dated July 2, 1867.
IMPROVED ROOF AND GLAPBOARDING BRACKET.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
VBe it known that we, H. WL HOLDEN, T. J. Moonns, D. H. Smurfen, and Gunnar REYNOLDS, of Biosa burg, Tioga county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Rooling and Clapboarding Bracket; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of ,this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view partly in section of our improved bracket, showing the same applied to rooting purposes. l

This invention relates to a new bracket which can be easily applied to roofs of housesfor shingling purposes, or to the sides "of houses for supporting platforms foi' the` builders` to stand upon, and for many other, and which is so arranged that it will firmly hold itself in position withoutinjuring the boards, posts, or shingles to which itis clamped.
The invention consists in so constructing the main bracket that it' will not only hold'itself imposition, but also so that a truss for supporting the platform in clapboarding, or one for holding the board for shiugling, can be` easily attached to and held in the bracket. l
A represents the bracket', which is made inshape of a wedge-shaped metal plate, 'to the thick lower end or which a projecting rib, d, is cast or otherwise secured, as is clearly shown in iigs. 1 and 2. The upper thin end is slotted or forked, as shown in iig. 3. When to be applied t o shingles, the thin end is insert-ed under the uppermost row of shingles laid, `while the rib a will rest upon the next or one-of the 'next lower shingles, and being provided with pointed steel pins b, it will be secured to these shingles as soon as these points are inserted. The bracket is thus rmly held in the manner indicated by fig. 1. When to be used tc support horizontal plat forms, the thin upper end of the bracket is placed under a clapbo'ard, or a nail is driven in such a manner into the board or post on which the bracket is to be attached, that its head will fit over the edges of the slot, and
will therefore prevent the upper end of the bracket from swinging back. The -lower end is securely held in position by means of the steel pins bi, as shown. i The lower part of the-bracket is perforated by an oblong hole, c, above which a downward pointing hook, d, is rmly secured to the front ofthe bracket. e is a plate projecting at right angles, or nearly so, from-the front of the plate A, being strengthened by meanso'f triangular or other bracesf, whichconnect its under side with the lower part ot' the bracket. Thiswplate e is arranged in line with the lower end of the hole c, and the latter is continued a short distance in the plate e.. g g are two checks arranged on either side of the hole c,'on the front of the bracket A, between the plate e and hook o?, as shown. B is a metal or other har which is provided with a hook, 7i, at one end, and one end of which is passed through a hole, e, so that the hook h will fit under the hook d, as show xi'in fig. 2. The inner endof the baror truss B is thus held by the hook d and plate e, while its outer vend is supported bya brace, z', which is cast to lits under side, and of which therinner end rests against the lower part of -the bracket A, as is clearly shown in fig. 2. It will be seen that the truss B is thus set on edge. .Lateral motion of the bar B is prevented by the checksg, and by a stop pin or pins,j, which are formed on the under side of the bar B, and which tit into holes `or slots provided in the plate e. The trussB. is Vthus firmly secured tothe side of the building, and will be capable of supporting a. very heavy weight. Its'e'uter end may be provided with an upward projection, lc, to prevent a board from falling over the end. To the upper edge of the truss are secured pointed. steel pins Z- which are'pressed into the board that may be placed upon the truss, to prevent the same from slipping. This combined bracket-and truss may-also be used for other purposes, for suspending weights, tc. C is a barvof similar construction asthe bar'B, but is not provided with a brace, z'. The upper end of the brice D is forked and its around .the bar C between pins n n which are secured to the latter. Thelower end of the brace D is provided with steel pins o o, by which it is held in the shingles, as is clearly/.shown in iig. 1. The bar C is long enough to allow the application of a board for a rest for the shingles, said board being also able to sustain a number of `loose shingles on the roof within easy reach of the workmen.
